Do people use wedding hashtags?

Heather, on January 20, 2022 at 10:39 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 12
What has been your experience with wedding hashtags? I always see a lot of posts here asking for help coming up with hashtags, but when looking at hashtags for weddings I've actually been to they're almost never used. Is this maybe just an issue with my social circle, or are they generally not as popular as they seem?

I think you're right. When I search hashtags for the weddings I've been to, there's only like 2 photos posted. We aren't going to have one.

It was really popular in the early 2010's when hashtags in general were used for more than fighting an algorithm. Anymore I feel that people overlook it and if there is one most people dont know about it anyway. I also dont see too many people taking personal photos outside a formal shot or two during the wedding or reception. People are there to have fun.

We're still trying to decide if we want one, but leaning against it for this reason.

That's a good point - I hadn't thought about how hashtags in general aren't as popular as they used to be and that could be part of the issue.

We didn't have a hashtag and it was fine. People just texted/WhatsApped us any photos they took. Also, our photographers were amazing and took a lot of group shots and candid shots at the reception, so I have professional pictures of me posed with friends as well as dancing and having fun.

That's great! Definitely good to have professional photos of the reception and dancing in addition to the guest photos. Did you ask people to text you their photos or did they just choose to send them?

From the weddings we have attended in the past several years both together and separate, we have very rarely seen anything technological as guests. One cousin recently married and used an Amazon link for his registry but he’s a software engineer. And that was the extent of anything online. We know 2 different couples who did electronic invitations instead of paper and those backfired badly because guests thought they were save the dates or didn’t know what they were and hardly anyone showed up.

So in our social circles and families, hashtags and websites would get a raised brow and not accessed. Plus not everyone uses the same social media outlets.
If guests want to share pictures they have taken, which is a common practice for decades past, they just send them directly to you without a hashtag.

I agree! I have never paid attention if weddings I’ve attended have had hashtags or not, and truthfully never knew it was a “thing” until my photographer asked if we were using one. We decided not to even bother with it and had no regrets!

I like hashtags because you can see other guests' pictures you would not have seen otherwise if you don't know all the guests and are not connected on social media. You have to know your guests though. Our social circle actually understands how Instagram works and uses hashtags. It really only works for Instagram. For Facebook, which is what mostly boomers use now, you just have to tag the couple, and whoever is friends with the bride and groom on Facebook can see them. The last wedding we attended had a hashtag and some guests used it.

I think Candace offers really great points about the usage of instagram versus Facebook/Meta. Personally, I’m a millennial that ditched using both at different times in the last 4 years because it just didn’t feel like I needed it anymore.

That might change while I am changing careers, but I mainly contact people via calling or texting. Everyone is different though!
Some people are into social media and for those that have big families who use instagram (actually I’ve seen some boomers start using that and Twitter more now), you might enjoy seeing on your feed.
When my partner and I have our wedding, I might use a hashtag or just mark our save the dates with a funny pun. It’s (#hashtags) enjoyable if you love wordplay! So take the task with a grain of salt as being “necessary”.
