Do some guests try to dress up their kids as if they were in the wedding?

The Sealpups, on November 16, 2021 at 9:25 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 5
Just noticed that my husband’s cousin’s daughter dressed up in a pink dress wearing a flower wreath headband for our wedding. She was not a flower girl, there were rumors swirling around (before our wedding) that “blush” was our wedding color. Knowing my husband’s cousin’s (she’s a tried and true narcissist), it may have been her way of trying to have some wedding clout. Luckily, our flower girls wore something other than blush and they had their time to shine during the ceremony and had their own intro during the reception. Some people thought it was weird that the cousin dressed her daughter up in that way. Has this happened to you?

I have never experienced this (either first hand, or as a witness), but I really don’t find this to be offensive or in poor taste. It’s one thing if an adult tries to masquerade as part of the wedding party, but allowing a small child to wear a pretty dress and a flower crown doesn’t seem malicious in any way. Young girls like to play dress up 🤷🏼‍♀️ And I’d feel horrible if a young child felt left out at my wedding. So, if wearing a cute little flower crown made her feel as though she was part of the celebration, I don’t see anything wrong with it.

Thank you for your perspective! I wholeheartedly agree that if it’s anything to make her feel better, I am 100% for it as well.

I did forget to mention some info (for context) that cousin’s daughter is 9 and the flower girls were 3. All of the other weddings in my husband’s family, she did not wear a flower wreath headband. Husband says his cousin grew up very spoiled so it wouldn’t surprise me if they felt entitled that her daughter be a flower girl.

Never heard of this? Maybe they have never attended a wedding before and didn’t realize it was inappropriate? Or they did it out of spite. It’s impossible to say.

I think having a flower crown at that age is a bit odd, it would have made more sense if she was really little. But, dressing up in a floofy princess dress is fine! What else would a child wear to a wedding, really - after all, it's hard to 'dress up' at that age because lots of parents wouldn't feel comfortable with their kids having their makeup done, so the dress is one of the only ways to look more formal.

I think the flower crown is a bit odd, but it doesn’t sound like she stole the thunder of your actual flower girls and didn’t cause a scene. So, I wouldn’t worry about it.
