Do you invite an absentee parent and his family to wedding?

Cindy, on November 2, 2021 at 8:05 PM Posted in Family and Relationships 1 5

So I'm kind of in a rut here.

My parents have been divorced since I was 12. I moved out of state a year later and never saw my dad for about 5 years. He's never really been there. Has seen his ONLY grandchild less than 10 times in her 14 years of life. When he found out I was getting married he sent over money. His side of the family has always been cool. We send Christmas cards to each other and stay in contact through facebook. Since were a state away they haven't bothered to come see us over here but I Do go over there to see them when I am able. Do I invite my dad? Do I invite his side of the family? Or do I not invite any of them?

Do you want them there? When you picture your wedding day, do you imagine them there? Will them being in attendance make your day all the more special? I would base your answer on the way you answer those questions.

Only you can answer that question. Maybe schedule a dinner with him/them just to catch up, see how that goes and decide from there.

I would not invite dad because he has not made any effort to be part of your life at any other time and no one should ever be invited out of obligation to make others happy. A wedding is not a community free for all event where you invite you have ever met. It is only for your nearest and dearest closest current support system. If you want the other relatives in attendance and can’t imagine the day without them, go for it.

Where people are located is irrelevant because they always travel for weddings.

If you want him there, sure. I think you're not under any obligation to invite him though.

It sounds like you answered your own question with “He’s never really been there.” Invite people who support and love you.
