Do you take off your ring...

Kat, on December 8, 2011 at 5:53 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 85

Does anyone take off their engagement or wedding ring while sleeping, working out, showering, cleaning, swimming...or any other time? Right before I got engaged, I started noticing women with rings on (probably because I had e-rings on my brain at all times!) at places like the gym and the beach and I was surprised. I would be afraid of losing it or catching it on something, etc. We got engaged in Vegas and spent a couple of days out at the pool while there. FH and I were both very adamant about leaving my ring locked up in the safe while we were at the pool. My sister mentioned sleeping and showering with hers on and I realized it never occured to me that it would be "safe" to do so. So how many of you leave yours on at all times?

The only time I've taken mine off so far has been to do the dishes. I haven't had the chance to go swimming since being engaged, so I hadn't thought about that yet. But I know my stepsister kept hers on the whole time when were on vacation on the beach.

I take mine off while sleeping, deep cleaning, showering, gym...but i notice that I already feel lost without it. I hear that over time, once the newness of your ring wears off that you will naturally just tend to wear it more and more.

I take mine off to swim, clean, shower, and when I workout. I also used to not wear it to work, but I worked in a Jail, and had to break up altercations and stuff. Now that I am a teacher it stays on Smiley smile..Don't wear it in the ocean if it is slightly big..a good friend of mine dove into a wave, and when he came up his wedding band was gone forever..

I keep mine on all the time(pool, working out, showering, etc) however I havent been to the beach yet since we got engaged, so may take it off there if got in the ocean. I do however take off when putting on lotion just so doesnt get dirty :-) I would say if it fits comfortably it should be ok to leave on.

The only time I take it off is to be cleaned, or when I have go to practice or tournaments (I swim and play water polo - chlorine is yuck and we're not allowed jewelry during games... or nails for that matter).

Mine is pretty snug and have to really pull to get it off, even if there is soap or lotion on my hands. I don't really think it could just come off on its own.

I take mine off to cook, wash dishes, shower and clean up. I never want anything fragrant or colored to cause my diamonds to cloud. Which is what happen before. I would do everything in my engagement ring. When I went back to pick out my wedding band, the person helping me noticed and told me to take them off during those times.

@Ginny I also feel lost without mine when I don't have it on. I moved in with FH this past weekend and decided not to wear it during the move...and my finger felt so naked all day without it on! I can understand how that newness would wear off after a while and I imagine that over time I will not be quite as paranoid about it.

I only take mine off to shower. I think it's just as risky to keep taking it off and putting it back on. You only have to forget to put it back on once to lose it. If it fits well there should be no problem with it slipping off. I've heard way more stories of women taking their ring off to wash their hands, and accidentally knocking it into the drain than a ring slipping off a woman's hand and going down the drain.

I take mine off when I'm sleeping, showering, cleaning, doing dishes, sometimes cooking depending on how "hands on" the cooking is, swimming. Some of those times it is purely for comfort (sleeping... I don't need a diamond jabbing into my face if I sleep on my hand lol), safety (swimming or anything near drains etc), or just to prevent any extra wear on the ring. My center stone is a family heirloom so even though my e-ring is naturally precious to me, the stone makes me even more careful with it.

My hands are never consistently one size so all in just a couple hours I have moments when my ring is tight and moments when it is loose. So my ring isn't always secure and I am extra careful about it.

Whenever I take it off, I keep it in a safe place so that I won't lose it, normally the ring box that it came in.

I take it off all the time~ cooking, cleaning, sleeping, showering… when I've had too much salt and my fingers get puffy…

But I treat it like the rest of my rings, I take off rings for all of those reasons. Why would an engagement ring be treated differently?

I it off to shower, primarily. When we recently went on vacation I left it in the room-safe whenever we went down to the beach, though if it fit better I would probably leave it on.

I also remove it for dirty chores like washing dishes or cleaning the cat litter box.

Mine is pretty much always on.

I only remove it if I'm using a VERY abrasive cleaner, if I'm rock climbing or skiing, or if I'm knee deep in the kitchen - like pulling the gizzards out of the thanksgiving turkey.

I couldn't wear it most of this summer b/c we moved from Denver to Nashville during a humid heat wave, and my hands swelled like crazy.

Otherwise- it's always on. ALWAYS. I feel naked without it. I actually scrub it in the shower with a toothbrush. I stop by the jeweler every few months for a deep clean so gunk doesn't build up on the stone and to check the prongs, but that's NBD to me.

@FutureMrsOhler I am the same in that my ring will be snug sometimes and loose other times so that is my main reason for taking it off at times like taking a shower, swimming, doing the dishes, etc. I also use the box it came in when I take it off.

Oh also, I don't think there is any right answer on whether you should take it off at times and not. It's all a matter of preference and might also depend on the type of ring you have (if I had a plain gold wedding band and only wore that I probably wouldn't take it off for most of the things in my previous post).

What really bothers me are people (not talking about anyone in this thread) who give off a judgemental/holier than thou attitude about never taking off their ring because of the symbolism and commitment as if someone who takes off their rings at times to take care of/protect it is any less committed to their engagement or marriage than someone who wears their ring 24/7.

Too funny...I asked this question along time ago...I always took my e-ring off...shower, sleep, wash my hands. I was so worried about something happening...it became crazy for me...that I finally had to ask!

Now, I just keep my ring on all the time...the only time it every really comes off is if I'm cleaning dishes or cooking something where I need to mush my hands into it...like kneading dough.

I don't take mine off because I feel that my commitment depends on it, or is superior. I just don't take it off because I'm scatter brained AND a klutz. I would either forget to put it back on, or would accidentally knock it down the drain or it would fly into a bird's nest 40 feet outside of my window. It sounds exaggerated, but the most unfortunate and awkward things happen to me with my keys, so I don't want to risk my e-ring.

Puffins, I'm totally the same way. In the last year I've managed to:

*drop a cell phone into a beer

*drop my keys down an elevator shaft

*drop a cell phone down a toilet

and about a jillion other things. I figure the ring is way safer if it's attached to my body, than if I'm juggling it in my butterfingers. Smiley smile
