Does a thunderstorm always ruin a wedding? Anyone who had thunder on their wedding- please respond!

Jenny, on September 3, 2014 at 4:16 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

My wedding is in 3 days (ignore the stats in my profile) and there is a good chance of thunderstorms. I'm crushed. I wouldn't care if it was only rain- I've come to terms with rain since we have a great indoor option and dance tent- but if there are thunderstorms, we won't be able to have ANY dancing because the tent isn't safe from lightning, plus someone may even get electrocuted inside the house (it's possible) and I'm so afraid the wedding will be ruined

I know rain on a wedding day can actually be a little romantic, but thunderstorms?! I know the man I'm marrying is the mostimportant thing, and I love him so much...but I'm afraid that if our wedding is ruined, we'll never be able to look back on it happily, no matter how strong our love is. We may not have ANY music or lights, and who knows lightning may hit us!

Any brides had this happen? Any advice for how to deal? I know I can't control it, but that doesn't really make me feel better. I'm afraid it's all ruined

    You could make the most of it and play "here comes the boom"? Sorry, I don't have much advice, is it possible to have enough room for dancing inside? Even if after eating you kind of have to scoot the tables aside?

    I'm definitely not going to play that song lol...I want it to still be elegant and dignified and I want it to be fun IN SPITE of the weather, not because of the weather. I don't want people to look back on it and be like "Oh, the thunder wedding." Although I have a feeling it's going to be seen even worse than that...ugh

    There is enough room for my husband and I to have our wedding dance indoors, but not enough room for the wedding party to have their dance floor and everything. Its a real bummer.

    It came a downpour and thunderstorm an hour before my friends wedding this summer! it lasted 20 min and then went away. it could be a morning storm so dont stress too much! or maybe storms rolling through the night before your wedding and theyll be gone when you wake up.

    @Kristen

    The forecast says PM thunderstorms, although the forecasts appear to be varied and changing. I really hope it's out of the way by the ceremony! That would be awesome, but I'm not betting on it. I want to prepare for a worst case scenario so I can process it and be pleasant regardless of the outcome.

    ^^Thunderstorms are sneaky little tricksters like that. My area has had dozens of thunderstorm forcasts recently, and they always end up being at 4 am

    Things will work out . It STORMED right as we were setting up the chairs for the ceremony the night of the rehearsal dinner. knocked down all the chairs, knocked down the Arch that was made out of wood for the wedding. Just a mess but between everyones help and understandings thigns went well. It was saying all week it was going to storm the dayof the wedding also and then the day came and there were no clouds in sight.

    Stay positive! You can still dance during lighting the issue will be the equipment. Any chance you could get a small generator? That's what the owner of our reception venue did just in case but it wasn't needed.

    Let me tell you a story of a stormy wedding day: A tropical storm visited us during our outdoor wedding by a lighthouse in Puerto Rico (the first to arrive this early in the season in many many many years). Although there was not a lot of thundering/lighting, we had winds of up to 50 mph and inches of water rained over a period of 6-8 hours. I was sooooo sad most of the hours before the ceremony but my DH and friends made sure everything was as good as it could be for my big entrance. We didn't have a back up plan as the storm came out of nowhere the night before when it was supposed to be 90 degree sunny and humid. They move the 50 chairs to inside a gazebo (no walls, but really high ceilings) in the park. The relief station and ceremony table were also cramped inside the gazebo. Apparently everyone was joking about having a relief station very well stocked with water when it was raining buckets. The decoration for the actual ceremony gazebo we rented was not used. But people open the parasols right when I arrived to the end of the aisle so I didn't fixate on the water on the floor or the decoration :-) It made me feel so happy, I nearly cry but all I can hear is everyone saying "please don't cry."

    We were also lucky that we had rented a hall for the reception. But of course, flooding made getting to the place which was all the way up on a mountain very difficult.

    Anyway, you see how even during a storm things can still work out? Plus, IF you do get bad weather it will make for a good story to tell about your wedding day. I sure have a blast every time I tell people "we got married during a tropical storm" ;-)

    omg your story brought me to tears! Were you upset during/after the ceremony? Do you look back on it with any bitterness?

    Well, we both regret not having beautiful pictures of everyone by the lighthouse. So, we are planning a trip back to celebrate our first anniversary (which is also my bday). Hope to be able to wear the gown and take pics :-)

    I had a meltdown when waiting in the car for my father so we can walk down the aisle because he was behind us but disappeared. I called my mom to figure out why they were not there yet, turned out his car broke down (car didn't like a big puddle!!!). That pushed me to the edge and started crying but only for a second - I realized the makeup was going to be ruined if I cried :-)

    But really, everyone made me feel very special. Guests and DH texted me the whole time they were waiting for me (I was two hours late due to many delays) saying they were sooo happy to be there regardless of the rain and how beautiful it was going to be. I have no regrets in that arena.

    Everything went so fast that I do regret feeling so sad before the wedding thinking it was going to be ruin (sounds familiar?). It wasn't! Everyone is still talking about how beautiful it was, the good food, cake and plenty of alcohol. Do your best to absorb everything and enjoy the day no matter what the weather is like.

    @2014AD

    Aw, how nice! I'm sick of people insinuating that I'm a bridezilla (not on weddingwire, of course) because I'm upset about the weather. Who wouldn't be? I mostly just want to make sure people are safe, have fun and that we get nice pics. Luckily our wedding is indoors, but FIL is trying to make it outside under a tent...all I can think about it my hair and the wind! NO!

    I'm glad everyone had fun at your wedding. I'm sure I'll regret feeling so gloomy about it. I'm obviously excited for it regardless, but I just REALLY don't want to deal with all the annoying "stole your thunder" puns from distant relatives. lol

    @2014AD I'm thinking of using it as a Facebook status so nobody re-uses it for the wedding. Own it before they can, you know?

    Sorry, I have some REALLY corny family members coming lol
