Does white really mean virgin anymore?!?

NJ Bride, on July 12, 2011 at 1:09 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 15

Haha... so of course I'm watching one of the Say Yes to the Dress episodes from this weekend and the FSILs are insisting on the bride wearing a white dress so everyone knows she's a virgin when she marries their brother. That honestly wasn't a factor in picking my dress color! I'm pale so I went with ivory - whether or not I'm a virgin never crossed my mind for the color! Was following that tradition actually important to anyone?

Just curious. Smiley smile

I think it depends on your family.

Not important to me...I'm not a virgin, and I'll probably be wearing white

LOL, not anymore dear, if anyone believes that these days, well...they've all been fooled...

I'm wearing ivory and red because the minute I saw AA's dream of color dress collection 3 years ago, I fell in love and drop the idea of wearing white, I know for sure that some people will assume that I do this because I'm not a virgin (which is somewhat true but not entirely) I'm also not covering my face with the veil (which also signifies virginity)

Had I not seen AA's collection, I'd probably be wearing white to my wedding, people can think what they want...

I don't think white has been associated for a girl's virginity at the time of marriage for a very long time. If it was, there would be a lot less white gowns for sale. One of my grandmother's favorite story was about how when she went to pick out flowers for her wedding the florist told her she should have white roses as a sign of her purity. She said ok white roses it is, but maybe a really small red carnation too.

For some it does! I remember one of my friends wanted to wear a dark red dress. Her mom was freaking out because everyone would think she was a whore lol. Then when she settled on ivory her mom was freaking out someone might realize it wasn't white. All the linens had to be changed to ivory.

I will say that I recently went to a wedding and all the ceremony decor was white while the dress was ivory. I might be "trained" but it really bugged me.

I don't really know this answer but I was about to wear ivory. Actually, I'd always planned on wearing white, and found I looked good in ivory as well. Almost got ivory, and would have been totally okay with it too. In the end, I ended up w/ white and it was a hard descion to make. I think we went w/ white though cause the sparkle on the white stood out more than on ivory, and they thought my colors, and BM dresses would pop more beside white. So I went w/ white but I was very close to goin with ivory.

And I have been living w/ FH for like a year and half now, so I am not really that innocent. I was also told that the White can mean pure too, not neccesairly virginal but pure, which I don't think pure, and virginal have to mean the same thing. They could but they don't have to.

I wore white for my first wedding, even though I'd already been living with the groom for a couple of years before that. And the reason NotFroofy and I wore ivory for my second wedding is that it looked better with our skin tones. If that hadn't been the case, we would have worn white, even though my two grown children were our attendants.

White wedding dresses only came into fashion with Queen Victoria. And what they symbolized with her was riches. Before that, brides had typically just worn their best dress for their weddings. Wearing a white dress (which would not be practical for every day wear) indicated that Queen Victoria was rich enough to be able to afford a special dress just for her wedding.
