Doilies instead of chargers

Sarah, on November 4, 2015 at 4:07 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 21

Hi all, I'm doing a buffet style reception and instead of over thinking, I thought I'd ask you all! We will have the high quality plastic plates with silver trim. I've thought about doing charger plates, but our budget won't allow that. I found that you can get around 500 10inch dolies for $10. do you think that would look better or worse than nothing to set the table?

I've been thinking about doing this too - I'm actually having food trucks cater but I want the tables to look "set" so I figured the doilies would do that and be affordable.

    Greetings, Sarah!

Bravo to you for sticking to your budget. Yes, the doilies will add a nice touch when the Guests place their plates on top of the doilies.

All the best for an outstanding Wedding Day celebration! Smiles...

    Sincerely, Michele

I'm using a lot of lace in my decor too, and I like doilies in general. But I think I'd skip something under plates before using a paper doily as a charger. I think chargers aren't necessary anyway. Will the tables be set with a plate or will guests pick up a plate at the buffet? Without a plate on the table I'd be afraid the doilies would be too light to stay put.

Hmmm, I wanted chargers, but know I can't afford them. This is definitely an option to consider.

I love doilys Smiley smile I think I'm secretly an 80 year old grandma, lol. But anything that looks lace-like is pretty to me. I think you got a very good deal there.

Someone did this this year and for the life of me I can't remember her name, but I do remember it looked really pretty! Maybe try google/the crappy search bar to find her posts.

ETA: Looks like it was @Jeanne lol!

We did that and I loved the way it looked. I bought a bunch of gold ones on etsy but lots of party supply places have them in different colors and slightly heavier duty than the basic paper ones.

@Samantha, the metallic ones are much pricier (but also nicer and thicker) -- like around $1 each, I believe. I bought some really pretty silver ones on Etsy, but found a great deal on chargers in time for the wedding. I'm hoping to come up with some crafty thing to do with them, though, cause they're really nice doilies!

@OP -- where do you live? I still need to properly clean my silver chargers, but I'm looking to get rid of them and I'd be willing to ship them to you if you cover the cost (and like them, of course). I have 130 (I need to check for breakage, though), half are pebbled and half are plain -- the styles look good mixed together, too. I'm happy to send you pics, etc, if you're interested!

I'm doing the exact look that Lynnie posted, minus the name. I did have concerns about them blowing off when the guests go to the buffet line, so I am going to be using double sided tape to stick them to the table.

I went with metallic ones (12") from Mailbox Happiness on Etsy. I think I spent $80 for 120 of them. I think doilies are great, and MUCH easier to transport than chargers. The 10 for $1 ones work too, but I'd look into 12" if you can find them instead of 10". One of my BMs made a good not regarding doilies vs chargers-- people won't randomly think the doily is a plate!
