Doing My Own Makeup on Wedding Day

Breanna, on October 6, 2020 at 8:32 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 16
Hi there! So I have loved doing makeup for years. I used to do my friends makeup for proms in high school. My love for makeup has carried on into my adult years. I have even done makeup for a bride on her big day. I am not certified or a professional but I love doing it. So I decided I wanted to do my own makeup for my big day. I told my bridesmaids and family that I would have a makeup artist for them. I have gotten some mixed feedback about not having mine professionally done. Everyone is coming from a good place and says they just want me to feel pampered on that day, but I feel I know how to bring out my best features and I want to just feel like the best version of myself on that day. I did my own makeup for my engagement photos(I will attach a few). What do you think?Doing My Own Makeup on Wedding Day 1

I agree with your friends and family that it's definitely nice to feel pampered and not have the stress of doing your own makeup on your wedding day, however, this is your day and you should do what makes you feel comfortable. If you're more comfortable doing your own makeup, go for it! It looks like you do a wonderful job!

I agree with the previous comment. I do a great job with my hair & makeup but I want to feel pampered that day. You did a great job on your makeup/hair on your engagement photos. How about doing a trial & if it comes out looking horrible than you know for sure you made the right decision!

I agree with the pp. I can do my make up pretty well too but for the day of I want a professional and one less thing for you to have to worry about carrying around. I think for your pre wedding events it is okay to do your own make up but I need an expert who knows about color combos and hiding blemishes. I say if you can afford it get the professional and it does make you feel pampered and special. I felt like that for my trial.

It's up to you. I would imagine you would feel stressed no matter which route you go. I had my makeup done by a professional for my engagement session and I felt overwhelmed. I hated the way I looked in person but I ended up loving the edited photos. Mind you, I never wear makeup. I've only worn it three days in my life lol.

Do it! I did my own makeup due to Covid difficulties and also, I like doing my make-up and I do it well. I totally agree with what you're saying about knowing your features and preferences. I had my makeup done professionally for a wedding in December and it was... fine. I definitely don't airbrush my skin but that's not how I like it. I say 100% go for it! Engagement pics are beautiful.

Thank you ladies for your input! I think I will book a trial and go from there. If I still feel iffy about it then I will do my own.

Thank you Katie! Yes I totally understand you!! I think as things get closer I will be able to make the right decision. But in the meantime I will be practicing alllllll the wedding looks! (and going to Ulta to buy makeup because it's "for the wedding") lol

I had a professional do my makeup for my bachelorette party and I like the way I do my own makeup better. I'll be doing my own for my wedding as well. I'm sure I won't feel any less pampered.

Hahah, yuppp that's exactly what I did. Lots of trials, but honestly, after a couple I was reassured - I know how to do my makeup. Have fun!

I think that sounds like a great plan Breanna!! There's definitely a balance between wanting to feel pampered and in the hands of a pro on your wedding day, and stressing about if they'll do your makeup the way you like!

I think your makeup looks stunning for your engagement photos!! Especially your eyes!! 😍 I bet if you hired someone who does hair & makeup you could also talk with them about having the pro do your face, but you do your eyes?? It doesn't hurt to ask!

That's awesome Blair! I keep telling my family I won't feel any less pampered either. I will still have a professional do my hair so I think I will still feel the "pampered treatment"

Exactly my hair and nails will be professionally done. I just prefer to do my own makeup.

For my minimony, I had my BMs help with makeup. I was originally planning to hire a makeup artist, but changed my mind for the small wedding. I practiced with my girls in advance to determine what I liked, and it came out great. If you are comfortable doing your own the day of, I would recommend it, because it might even be soothing to you to do it, versus having to rely on someone else to do it in a timely and perfect manner. But maybe look into trials just to make sure you are good with your decision.

I did my own for my wedding, and do whenever I am in a wedding. If you have practised enough there are no nerves, no hesitancies, any more than you are likely to forget how to put one foot in front of another when walking. And it frees you from HMU who yes, did you perfectly at the trial, but this time make you look like someone else. The greatest freedom is that you are not bound to waiting with or for a group of others on wedding day. You do not need to see anyone between stepping in the shower, and appearing with your hair done, make up on, except 1 or 2 other people you choose. . I was up and dancing til 3 am, having been going straight except a brief nap. We did a photo shoot, followed by posed photos, starting at 4, 7 pm wedding. The day up til 2:30 was free. Relaxed, no waiting for others, or appointments. FI and I lunched in town with 2 bm and their SO, had done so with others the day before. Relaxed, quiet, none of the irritation of being in tight quarters with others also nervous. Having stayed for group turns for hair and makeup with a group as a bridesmaid 4 times, after taking care of my own for years for wedding party, before people hired MU artists, I hated the group waiting for turns. Something goes wrong with one, or person wants a change, and group pressure is not to let them use up precious minutes. HMUA are behind schedule, everyone is irritable. No thank you. Since then I have refused services up front, tell bride so she knows. If she does not want it because she "thinks everyone needs MU done by the same person," I will decline being BM. I do not like chaos, noise, or people around me getting nervous and nudgy while they wait for turns at the start of a long day. This is time to myself, or with hubby.
I don't feel pampered waiting with a group for turns, I feel harassed.
Decide which you want, group or doing it yourself, and stick to it. You do an excellent job on yourself, which makes you lucky enough to have a choice.

    Hey there!
I personally was too busy and too nervous on my wedding day to do my own makeup. Although, I feel like you do, in that I know how to make myself and my best features stand out.

For me, it wasn't so much about pampering, I was just so relieved to have one less thing off of my plateSmiley smile
I'm sure you will make the very best decision and it will turn out fabulous! Congratulations! ❤💐🥰
