Doing my own makeup — suggestions?

Kelsey, on August 15, 2019 at 2:55 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 5 28
Hi ladies! I’ll be doing my own makeup for my July wedding, and I’m looking for suggestions on products you may have used. I need a foundation/coverup that’s pretty sweat proof, as well as a good setting spray to make sure everything stays in place.

Also, any recommendations on waterproof mascara would be awesome too! Thanks!

Unfortunately I'm commenting to get these suggestions too. Mostly the waterproof mascara.
I don't know if it's waterproof. But I use the Milani eyeshadow primer and setting spray and my makeup does not budge. I was a bridesmaid just two weeks ago in Virginia...outside...long dress... did my own makeup with all drugstore stuff and the setting stuff had it holding up for over 13 hours. So try that stuff maybe? It's cheap in case you don't like it too.

I don't know about mascara but depending on your skin type (I have oily skin), Estee Lauder Double Wear is my go-to for staying power and transfer resistance.

What are you looking for on the mascara front? Inexpensive? Volumizing? Lengthening?

Yes, this 100%!!!! I'm going to do my own makeup and tested the Estee Lauder Double Wear and it lasted all day, even after working out! I'm also using Urban Decay's All Nighter setting spray, but there are so many other setting sprays out there. I have mostly oily skin, so I am also going to have my mom or MOH carry blotting sheets or packed powder to do some touchups. Another thing I'd suggest looking into is a good primer. There are sooo many options out there depending on your skin type.

I would also recommend watching some YouTube videos on bridal makeup. I would suggest looking up foundations/setting sprays/primers that will work for your skin type! Good luck and congrats!!!

Also, it’s hard to recommend a setting spray or foundation without knowing your skin type. I use cover fx mattifying setting spray and Clinique stay matte oil free makeup, which is great for preventing excess moisture. I would recommend both, but I have oily skin, so it may not work for you.

Preferably lengthening and inexpensive! But I’m willing to splurge a bit on a product that I know will work.

Serve lutens waterproof comb mascara for lengthening or maybelline volum’ express the colossal waterproof mascara for an inexpensive option. I’ve used them both and they are both awesome.

Morphe setting spray is my favorite but IMO the most important item for you will be setting/baking powder. My wedding was this past June and it was sweltering but my makeup (that I did myself) didn't budge. I used Cover FX tinted loose matte powder, but I also really like Laura Mercier Translucent loose finishing powder (but I couldn't get this one off enough to not have flash back so I went with the tinted.)

As far as foundation, you really have to figure out what works for your skin. I can tell you the Makeup Forever Foundation sticks were an absolute dream for me. I can also say you should definitely try them, but if they or anything else someone else recommends, do no not work for you, then remember to return them to Sephora or Ulta within 30 days so you don't waist tons of money on foundation that doesn't work for you.

I like Benefit Cosmetics water resistant mascara (black tube & pink lid)

Also primer and moisturizer is super important! I will always recommend Tatcha but it is a bit pricy so for primer try elf and moisturizer try Clinique.

Too Faced!!!!! Their stuff is bomb! Their mascara is called Better Than Sex and it is amazing!

And their natural matte eye pallet is everything!!!

I like the Ulta brand eyebrow stick, setting spray, primer, and eye shadow primer.

Loreal has an inexpensive waterproof mascara called "lash paradise" it's suppose to be a good doupe of the better than sex mascara. I have heard that the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation does not photograph well but that's just what I have heard. I recently started using the tart foundconcealer and it's really nice.

I'm using Avon True Color liquid foundation. I've used it in the dead of summer and it was the best, it looked natural all day. All my makeup is from Avon. I love their line.

Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray. If you're worried about sweating their De-Slick is great too. But I swear by the the All Nighter. It's life.

Depending on skin type, I am THOROUGHLY impressed with the Born This Way foundation by Too Faced. I have super pale, and super pink toned skin and they actually had my color. I had to do a scavenger hunt race in 85 degree weather after taking grad pics. I blotted the sweat off my face and it still looked fine! To me, especially if you are gonna wear false eyelashes, mascara is a great place to save money. Smashbox matte liquid lip is pretty awesome. Urban decay up all nighter spray is a must!

Thanks! I am super into helping DIY makeup since I feel like I learned a lot the hard way! A couple more hints...

Don't use anything with SPF or you will have flash back.

Don't use anything with sparkle or you will have flash back.

Don't use anything tart accept blush (and this makes me sad because I freaking love everything tart) or you will have flash back.

Clinique makes a good waterproof one-- the name escapes me at the moment. Estee Lauder's never failed me either. Is there a Sephora or Ulta near you? They have a wide selection of products and the sales reps can make a recommendation to suit your needs pretty well!
