Do's and Don'ts

Jacey, on December 28, 2021 at 4:51 PM Posted in Community Conversations 1 5

Im getting married May of 2023! We are going a bit non traditional for both the ceremony and reception. Is there anything you wish you did or didn't do for your wedding? Any neat, non traditional ideas?

(We are have a "flower dude", no cake/cutting, no parent dance)

We are going very non-traditional also. No cake cutting, no spotlight dances, no speeches, no flower girls/ringbearers (no kids in attendance period), no bouquet or garter toss. We are hiring a tarot card reader for the cocktail hour and a caricature artist for the reception.

That sounds like fun! He gets nervous with public speaking so we are only have the wedding party and parents do speeches and we aren't writing our own vows either.

We are doing an anniversary dance (couple together the longest wins a bouquet) instead of the traditional bouquet/garter toss.

Love the sound of the flower dude! 👏 We skipped the wedding party, we walked down the aisle together, had a pirate-inspired reception in a wine cave, no dancing (but guests did dance while the accordionist played sea shanties!), no cake because a played dessert was already included, my hubby & I gave a pirate welcome toast in French & English because two guests didn’t speak any English, and had a mini skit with Captain Jack Sparrow (my hubby’s friend who was a guest dressed up during cocktail hour). We loved all the non traditional elements of our wedding!

Nothing to different for the ceremony here, but we ARE doing a handfasting ceremony in addition to the normal "I do" thing. I was so happy that the officiant I chose suggested it as a way for my BFF of 52 years to participate (she's a jp in another state, so can not legally marry us) We nixed the bouquet/garter shenanigans because we are senior citizens - AND because I never liked it to begin with. Ummmmm, small cake because we are having an Italian cookie/coffee station.
