Draping the Ceiling

Sara, on July 11, 2011 at 6:54 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 8

The ceiling at our venue is just an old drop ceiling, its turned yellow from years of the A/C vents running across it, and I really want to cover it. What would be the best fabric to cover this with. Tulle seems like it would be too thin, but anything solid would block out all the light... oh yeah I would like to use this to also dim down a bit of the lights as the ones there are just florescent lights, and tend to be brighter. Any suggestions?

Our venue is decorated for us, but they have the same issue with the ceiling. I really like that they use tulle that billows down. Inside the tulle, they drape icicle lights so when the lights turn down there is still some ambiance. Let me see if I can find some pics.

You will have to check with building codes too..sometimes there are restricitons of what can hang from ceilings. As far as the lights go, you can get scrims to go in front to change the color of the lights...maybe do a little search online to see what would work for the light fixtures at the venue?

See if you can use plastic table covering that comes on a roll from Party City. It's really inexpensive and once it's draped up high you can't tell it's not fabric.

This link didnt load right so you need to cut and paste the last part too, sorry!

@savanna, the ceiling isnt very high. I think its maybe 7 feet and FS is 6"3'. I dont want it to seem too cheesy. I'll have to find something to work on it. Thanks for the ideas.

Tulle with xmas light. or white light fabric. My BIL used to own an event deco company and that's what they use.

Whatever you choose (and I would use a product called voile) make 100% sure it's IFR (Inherently Flame Retardant) rated. Not something you can buy at the hobby shop or fabric store.
