Dress Alteration/lining Opinions Needed!

Emily, on August 10, 2021 at 4:01 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8
I need opinions/help on my dress alterations! I am in love with my dress (photo below for reference) the only problem is the cups that came sewed into the dress are a darker tone than my skin tone (I’m extremely pale, as you can tell), and I feel like they stand out too much and just look like big circles. I was thinking about lining the front with a nude fabric underneath. That way, the whole thing is one color and the breast area doesn’t stand out so much. I am having a hard time finding a fabric that matches my skin tone at least a little better than the cups do, and am not sure if it would look good or not.

I would line the part underneath the lace, but would keep the middle/illusion fabric between the beading without any lining underneath.

Any thoughts on how this would look, or other solutions? Thanks!! ❤️

Having cups shown like this is simply the stile of the dress. You'd be changing the entire top of the dress by having fabric underneath the sheath part. I'd speak to a seamstress about what your options are.

I would get a nude fabric that goes under the lace and over the cups so it’s one seamless color. I’ve gotten that done before on dresses that had lace on the back to cover my bra straps. You don’t need it to match your skin color you don’t notice it as long as it’s all one color across the front.

I think it would be ok to add some layers of nude tulle to the top bit until you get the level of coverage you're comfortable with - my sister almost had a nude underlayer for her dress, and she didn't like the way it looked so they built up layers of tulle underneath that section until it was as covered as she felt comfortable with. I'm sure they could do the same with this - and it's not as extreme as lining with plain fabric, which is a lot more obvious.

Omg we are dress twins ! I'm having the same thought, I feel the same way about the cups and am going to try to talk to alterations about doing a nude lining over everything instead. Did you end up doing the lining ? How did it turn out ?

Oh my goodness YAY! That’s so exciting! I ended up lining the front with a nude fabric that I found at JoAnn’s fabric store. I’m actually getting married tomorrow, so I’ll send you a pic of the final dress after that! It looks great

Thank you so much!! It turned out so well, I’m so happy with it all! Here’s a photo of the dress - I had her add the nude fabric to the front, but not the back. The fabric didn’t match my skin tone exactly but I think when it’s all one nude shade underneath it’s way less noticeable. I also felt more comfortable in it!
