Dress Alterations to Cover Up “flaws”

Trisha, on December 31, 2020 at 7:48 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11
We all have a part/s of our body that aren’t our favorite. The dress I’ve chosen is so beautiful and accentuates my favorite parts well, but unfortunately my upper arms are quite exposed. I don’t want to look back at wedding photos and grimace at my arms, but I also love my dress the way it is and don’t want to change it. The solution here would be flutter sleeves, at regular t-shirt length or elbow length perhaps. I’ve included of the dress from the maker’s website for reference.
Are any of you pondering a similar decision or have you already made one? Did you regret it? I want to be body positive, confident and proud but I know myself well enough to know I’ll dislike at least some photos because of it. Dress Alterations to Cover Up “flaws” 1

You are who you are so stick to your comfort zone. I dont plan to do anything drastic for alterations unless a corset to hide the tummy counts.

Right! So you’re sacrificing a bit of comfort for a different kind of comfort. I guess it’ll just have to be something to think about

I thought about that too. I lost my toned arms this year, and I gave a thought about adding sleeves but then I decided to leave the dress as is. It would alter the dress design and maybe one day I will regret looking at the pictures “Why the heck did I add those!”. Same about looking for shapewear, I decided to get back to exercise as often as I could and just wear only panties under the dress and nothing else 😉 You too still have time until your day, in case you want to feel better. I heard bride-body-insecurity is very common.

Such a pretty dress, I personally would leave it the way it is!

Yes, I picked out a dress that hid my flaws and complimented my best assets.

I have a better suggestion instead of altering the dress, you have 9 months until your big day, you can make changes to your upper arms with that kind of time, simple toning exercises will do wonders. Your dress is beautiful and I am sure you will look awesome in it.

I am getting my dress from cocomelody and they are adding sleeves - I don’t want bare arms either.
Fir that dress, if you can match the lace and have an experienced tailor add sleeves, maybe that would work?

Yeah I purchased the extra material on the dress order, just got home doubting myself. I’d love to see what the sleeves actually look like before making a final decision. I wonder how difficult it would be for the tailor to remove them if I dislike the change?

I wonder if you can alter the sleeves to bring them lower and make it an off the shoulder dress instead? I have bigger upper arms that I am self conscious about as well, and I typically always shy away from cap sleeve style tops for this reason. It tends to accentuates that area.

However, after promising myself that I would get an off the shoulder sleeve dress for my own wedding, I ended up in a sleeveless dress! My arms didn't look that big, but I did look back at some photos and cringe with regret. So keep that in mind. You will always notice your arms regardless of how good you look in the dress. And make sure you pose straight on and not to the side. Smiley winking And if you know how to photoshop - even better! Haha. I went back and fixed my arms on a few photos and I felt instantly better. Not recommended, but it's a quick fix. And like another poster said above, do arm workouts. It works!!

What if you flip the story - ask yourself if you might look back at pictures and be thrilled that you didn’t alter the dress and looked absolutely beautiful! I tend towards risk aversion as well, wondering what if something goes wrong, but what if it goes right? Many of the pictures from fancy parties or weddings when I was younger, when I thought I looked bad, I now think WOW. I wouldn’t alter a dress and completely change the look that you love just to hide your arms. Regardless of the dress, there will be some bad pictures... just delete them and only look at the good ones 😉

Look for some cover ups!! I think you can google wedding dress topper or something and there’s some cute stuff out there you can add!
