Dress cleaning for cigarette smell (not preservation)

Caitlin, on September 5, 2017 at 12:25 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 37

I took my dress to a seamstress who works out of her home. Unfortunately her husband is a smoker, so now my dress has that lovely cigarette smell. I've been airing it out and it seems to have helped a little, but I can still smell it. Is it worth taking it to a dry cleaner to have it professionally cleaned? Should I just spray it with febreze?? I don't want to smell like an ashtray on my wedding day!

Did you know that ahead of time? I would be asking for her to pay to have it cleaned if you weren't aware that her husband was a smoker.

Yes, definitely have that professionally cleaned. As a non smoker, I'd be pissed and ask the seamstress to pay for that. That's gross.

I would call the cleaners and see what they will do to get it out. See if they have to do a full cleaning or if they have something else before I spray anything on it.

I would hold off on spraying anything on it. Any spray you use has a ton of chemicals and they might ruin the dress.

I'd definitely be asking the seamstress to pay for that cleaning. Especially if you didn't know that her husband was a smoker and she didn't specify it. If she refuses to (which I hope she doesn't - if she does refuse, please include that in your reviews of her business), I'd take it to a dry cleaners. I wouldn't risk spraying Febreze or another product on it that could stain it or leave marks/spots.

The seamstress should pay you to get it cleaned, that's unacceptable.

Yeah the seamstress should definitely pay for a professional cleaning. I quit smoking almost three years ago and if I put my dress on and it smelled like smoke I would be livid.

IMO- febreze doesn't remove a bad odor, just makes a bad odor smell like it's also covered in febreze.

Talk to the seamstress about paying for the cleaning. She shouldn't be subjecting anyone's clothing to that.

It can discolor clothing, along with the terrible smell!

Was this a professional seamstress or a friendor? It seems incredibly odd to me that a professional seamstress would work with fabric in a smokey environment.

I am a smoker and that is ABSOLUTELY unacceptable and unprofessional. I would ask her to pay for the dry cleaning. How she thinks this is ok is beyond me?

Wow, that is DISGUSTING. I don't smoke and the smell of smoke on clothes is beyond unacceptable to me. I would call your seamstress ASAP and tell her to fix it.

The seamstress needs to cover the cost of having the dress professionally cleaned. She damaged your dress, and that is horrendously unprofessional!

That's incredibly unprofessional. She should be responsible for paying to have your dress cleaned. It makes me wonder how she is still in business.
