Dress code wording

Debra, on February 6, 2018 at 10:55 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 31

Hi all - just a little help needed on how to word the dress code for our beach wedding. I keep getting the question and I am just not sure how to describe it. It is a daytime brunch wedding on the beach (feet in the sand, reception in a tent next to ceremony). I would like my guests to dress nicer than they would to hang out by the pool, but I don't expect suits or formal dresses. For example, guys can wear khakis and short sleeved button down shirt, girls could wear a sundress. What is this type of attire called? I basically describe it that way to folks but it seems like there might be a word for this type of attire. Any thoughts are helpful Smiley smile

There’s probably a better phrase for it but it sounds like you are going more for business casual? That might at least help people understand

It’s kinda rude to state dress code on an Invitation. Most adults are able to dress appropriately for a wedding based on invitation and venue.

Maybe 'Cocktail Attire' or 'Beach Party Attire'? I found the following online:

    Traditional wedding attire wording:

Black Tie (Tuxedos and formal gowns)

Formal, black tie optional (suit and tie and dresses)

Semi-formal (suit and tie and cocktail dresses)

Cocktail attire (suits and party dresses)

Beach or garden party attire (summer suits and summer dresses)

Casual (button down shirts or polos and summer sundresses or a skirt or pants with a nice blouse)

Fun and unique wedding attire wording samples:

    Dress to impress

Dress: No suits or tuxes required!

    Semi-formal

    Country chic

    Dress: white

I didn't put it on my invitation. I just keep getting asked the question now and I was looking for a good way to describe it.

I feel like this would get the message across for me. Dress nice, but cute patterns and bright colors allowed.

Ooohhh not beach party attire! The first thing that came to my mind was bathing suit and cover up. Not that I would wear that to a wedding, but some may come in shorts!

Hmm good point! I am trying to avoid the shorts thing, although I guess in the big picture it really doesn't matter.

Well it's feet in the sand for the ceremony. The reception is in an event space that is right next to the beach (not sand) that happens to be a tent (open air to the water or closed with AC).

Hahah me too! I would say dressy casual or even church attire (depending on crowd)

If I were just telling individual people I would honestly just say "sundresses and khakis" instead of some type of label, just because labels can have so many definitions regardless of how exact it seems!

I was going to say the same thing. Just tell people khakis and sundresses. That gives them a better idea of the appropriate attire.

She didn't say it was going on the invite, she said she keeps getting the question-which implies that it was NOT specified on the invites. And it isn't rude.

Don't use the word "business." Too confusing, particularly for people who don't work in corporate America. I like the "beach party" description.

Resort attire would work, but you don't tell guests how to dress.

Day party attire ( that’s what we call it in Miami)
