Dress dyeing

Samantha, on March 8, 2016 at 5:21 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6

Has anyone ever tried dying a dress? This is my second wedding and I don't want a traditional white dress. I either want a red wedding dress or to buy a white one and dip dye the bottom ombré (kind of like Gwen Stefani's).I haven't had much luck finding a red dress yet- the only one I've loved comes in a almost neon red and I would want to tone it down to a scarlet or cranberry if possible. Any suggestions?

Try Alteria. (www.alteriaonline.com) Talk to them first about what fabrics to look for, or if the dress you have in mind would be possible. They do beautiful work.

If you do decide to dye come back and tell us how it went and what company you used! I'm thinking of dying my wedding dress and getting it hemmed to the knee so I can wear it on our anniversary.

Be aware that most wedding dresses are made of synthetic fabrics, which are typically made from fibers of plastic. Attempting to dye one of these dresses is like trying to dye a plastic spoon. You might get a pale residue of color over the plastic, but it can easily be washed away or bleed off, especially when wet.

I definitely recommend just looking into options like quince dresses or prom gowns, or try finding the few designers that do make colored gowns. Even if you manage to get the dress dyed your desired color, there is a HUGE likelihood that, like dyeable shoes, the dye will bleed if it gets wet or sweaty, AND all the stitching will remain white and stand out.

What about getting a BM's dress instead? Some come with trains and, of course, in a variety of colors.

Also, around the holidays at the end of this year, department stores will have red dresses/evening gowns.

This is my third wedding, and I didn't want a white dress either. I'm having one made by Wai-Ching - her dresses are awesome and come in many colors, usually ombré. I don't know what your budge is for a dress. Hers run a little under $1,000 for the most part. A fabulous price for a custom made dress.
