Dress for hot weather?

Stephanie , on June 15, 2017 at 6:51 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

So not that I'm in a big rush... but any advice on wedding dresses in hot weather and an outdoor wedding?

Details: Weddinng will be in Tennessee (Nashville area) the first weekend of September. I know that may sound like fall, but in the south it very much still feels like summer. The wedding is going be an evening one though (ceremony starting around 7:00-ish) so it will be cooler but not cool by any means. And probably humid... as for me, I'm very pear shaped, so dressed that flare out at the waist look best in me (A-line, ball gown) but I'm worried that if I get a dress like that I'll be too hot and won't be able to move and dance.... I'm not a super huge fan of dress changes either but I guess I'm open to the idea

Maybe I'm just being dramatic about this but it's actually the only thing I'm worried about right now. Thanks to any and everyone!

Ive only been in Nashville in November, but I live in AZ so I know what warm is like. I would think as long as your upper half is more exposed you should be a bit cooler. Ive tried on some beautiful thin strap dresses, that have like an over lay of lace/embroidery. That may help your situation!

You can find one, just got find one that doesn't have a lot of stuff underneath.

My concern though is not the dress but why would you have a wedding outside when you know its going to be hot and humid. Why put yourself, FH, and your guest through that. That is not properly hosting your guest.

Could you maybe change your date to more of a fall month if you are so keen on having it outside. Perhaps change it to inside.

It is not fair to anyone involved to sit outside for 2-6 hours of misery because you love the idea of an outdoor wedding.

I loved an outdoor wedding, couldn't imagine one inside whatsoever. But I also wanted an October or December wedding....in central Florida. THAT WASNT HAPPENING. So I sacraficed the month and we are going with February.

The great news is you definitely have a while and don't have to rush, like you said, so just enjoy the dress trying on process!

I probably wouldn't get a long train if I were you - I think the extra material will add to you feeling hot and when it's bustle, it may feel heavier to wear around. Something with thin or thick straps can look really elegant. If you're into it, backless or semi-backless will allow a little more air to flow to you.

I'm getting married the same weekend basically, outdoor ceremony in California. While we're not expecting it to be humid or unforgiveably hot, we're hoping it's warm. My dress thick straps for the top and hits the floor but has no train. It's also backless. So there are many ways for me to "cool down" so to speak. It's also all lace with no fancy embellishments or heavy jewels/crystals, etc. I tried on a few dresses that were beaded and had more than just lace going on and not only is that not my style but the dresses felt a little more suffocating on!

My dress was sleeveless and tea length. I didn't feel ridiculously hot standing in direct sunlight in 80 degree heat, but i did still have some boob sweat.

I would consider moving things indoors though if it is that warm. No one was comfortable and I felt terrible about it.

If you are worried about yourself, have you also considered how uncomfortable an outdoor wedding the beginning of September could be for your guests?

I'm in NY and it's hotter than hell the first half of September so I can't even imaging what it's like in the south.

Thanks guys! I love backless dresses so it's good to know they have extra benefits! I wasn't sure if there were certain materials that are better than others to wear, but I'll be sure to keep a lookout for lacy and/or lighter-weight dresses! Super helpful!

And thanks for the concern about the possibility of moving it as well. We chose our date because it's the anniversary of our first date/when he asked me out. Talking to my family/close friends, because of the time of day, no one seems to be too worried about it being too hot to stand. I definitely want an outdoor ceremony but I'm not opposed to indoor receptions. But I guess we'll just have to see!

Thanks again to everyone! Smiley smile

I have the same concern as Ashley. Why would you have an outdoor wedding in summer like temperatures? Horrible for your guests. I honestly don't really care why you picked your date. And it doesn't matter if your guests are thinking they'll be okay. No one will have a good time if it's 80 and humid. Just irresponsible hosting

I'm having a July wedding in Alabama, and my dress is strapless and A-line - our venue is indoor/outdoor though, so if I get hot, then I'll stand over an a/c vent for a while

We are having our wedding in Mexico and I had the same concern with being too hot in a dress. I bought a bridesmaid dress. It's all lace and looks exactly like what I had envisioned for my wedding dress. But, it doesn't have a ton of layers so it's not as hot. By getting a bridesmaid dress I also dis not get a train on my dress. I didn't want one. I didn't want it dragging sans or getting caught on anything while I am walking outside.
