dress preservation options?

APZ, on April 18, 2017 at 9:17 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

So I got married a few weeks ago and really need to get a game plan together for preserving my dress....brides to be-think about this pre wedding, so you aren't stuck hunting around after the fact like me!

Ive gotten a few quotes- one from a company based in Texas (Heritage preservation) for about $350-$500, they cant confirm a price until they actually see my dress. and another in NYC for about $200-250.

I am in Atlanta but haven't found anything reputable here yet. Recommendations? Is it worth it to fully preserve in a box? What have you ladies done?

For reference, my dress is a heavily beaded corset and really delicate silk skirt. The hem is moderately dirty from the wedding, but def not the worst I've seen and a guest stepped on my bustle an ripped out several of the points, causing a couple of smaller tears in the silk (There is so much fabric to the skirt they are hard to see) and of course a little sweat from dancing.

    Highly recommend this kit!

    https://www.weddinggownpreservationkit.com

    It was super easy to do and I am very happy with the service! I also had my veil preserved for no additional cost.

    David's Bridal also has a similar kit for slightly less, but it says "David's Bridal" all over the box and since my dress did NOT come from DB I did not want their store name all over my dress!

    ETA: The first time it was delivered, UPS dented the box from rough handling... the preservation company handled it very well, redoing it at no charge of course!

    Get on the website for the association of wedding gown specialists and find someone near you. Their process is fantastic, they don't seal the box which can trap moisture inside and they don't have the window which can be made from stuff harmful to you dress over time.

    My mom bought me the David's preservation Kit...you get get it even if you didnt buy your dress there. I bought my dress from a small boutique that wanted to charge $400 but davids was much more reasonable.

    I've seen some really neat alternatives to storing a dress away in a box where you can only see the top half. My mom hadn't seen hers in years until she pulled it out in case I wanted to try it on (I declined. It was gorgeous, but vastly different from what I wanted). If you aren't completely appalled at the thought of your dress being cut up, there is a company that uses wedding dresses to make "Angel Gowns" for babies that have left too early. Here is the link http://www.angelgowns.chauglie.com/

    Another idea I've come across is having pieces from your gown made into lingerie, but I'm having a hard time finding a company that actually does this lol. I plan to probably do both with my dress. I like the idea of re purposing it better than storing it away in a closet for however long, unless you could afford to have it preserved in a full sized shadowbox type frame that shows off most/all of the gown, like in this pic. It's gorgeous, but I'm guessing pricey. Has anyone done that, out of curiosity?

    @cassidie-

    I LOVE that shadowbox idea....my parents have a custom framing business on the side- so they could actually do this for me, BUT it would still need to be cleaned and preserved prior to doing this. Just trying to find my best options..what I really don't want it to just have it dry cleaned and have it yellow over the next few decades. I definitely want to keep it as potential for a future child using some or any part of it on their wedding day, for example I used to lace off my moms veil to wrap my flowers, since the actual veil was too short for me.

    @APZ

    I think the yellowing would maybe depend on the glass used on the shadowbox, and how much UV light hits it? And I don't know if it has to be airtight or not. If you go that route please let us know how it turns out, I think it would be amazing!

    I also did the DB kit. It was inexpensive and easy. Also, it came back to me really quickly. You don't have to buy your dress from DB to use it!

    Our trusted dry cleaners is handling this. I have a poofy wedding dress with a ton of beading on the top. They're fixing loose beads, cleaning, and putting it in the preservation box for $140. This is in Queens, ny.

    The shadowbox frame is just lovely! I have mine preserved from 19 years ago in a sealed box. Not sure what I plan to do with it, but I just can't part with it.
