Dress question

Andrea, on October 10, 2021 at 1:39 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15
I got my dress already but we have postponed the wedding to Fall 2023. I've heard of dresses turning yellow if they sit in a closet. Any idea how to prevent this??

This typically only happens when they sit for a very long time, or are exposed to a lot of sunlight. We have had to postpone our wedding twice now, so I have had my dress for two years. I was instructed to keep it in a breathable garment bag, and lay it flat somewhere dark (like the top of a closet, under a bed, etc.) I followed those instructions, and it hasn’t yellowed a bit over the past two years.

Oh okay I currently have it hanging in a closet and it is in a garment bag so I'm hoping it'll be okay

I was cautioned against leaving it on a hanger, as wedding dresses are typically heavy and having it on a hanger for an extended amount of time can stretch it out, warp it, or even damaged delicate fabrics/lace.

Lay it down on a bed in a bag but I think if it's in a garment

    bag it should be fine

This is true, but my alterations lady said it is fine if you use the straps inside the dress, rather than the actual dress straps. I had originally planned to lay my dress flat somewhere but she said it catches more dust like this, and did not recommend it. She suggested hanging it by the internal straps.

Did she say how it would collect dust if it is in a garment bag?? I have opened mine up twice over the past two years, and there is zero dust on it.

I guess she meant, even in the garment bag, a dress lying down flat is likely to gather more dust even if it's just on the outside of the bag, compared to if it is hanging up, simply due to gravity, etc.

I mean, real talk, when I tried my dress on in our house, I collected dust on the bottom of the train purely from walking around on our hardwood floors, so I honestly don't think lying a dress down vs hanging up is going to be the thing that causes irreparable harm or anything Smiley smile

Ahhh so collect dust on top of the garment bag, not the dress itself. It hasn’t done that (yet) but that’s totally fine with me if it’s on the outside of the bag. So long as my dress isn’t stretched out, warped or torn! The bodice of my dress is sheer and those delicate fabrics just don’t fair well on a hanger for long.

Legit, certain fabrics would definitely do better lying down. My dress is a super sturdy, heavy mikado silk ballgown, so whilst the straps would stretch out if they were bearing the whole weight of the dress since I collected it in October 2020 until now, it wouldn't be likely the fabric would be damaged otherwise.

Essentially, whatever the alterations person has suggested for your particular dress is likely to be the best way to go.

My boutique didn’t store wedding dresses due to covid last year and had all brides take them home to store. The directions were to remove the plastic from the dress and keep the dress in a breathable garment bag in a dark cool environment. Don’t put it somewhere that gets humid or hot. If your dress has straps it’s best not to keep it on a hanger and just lay it down flat so it doesn’t get stretched out.

My first wedding dress has been sitting in a cardboard box wrapped in cellophane for 7 years, still white as original

Your dress will be fine. My original dress was purchased in May 2019 and the wedding was postponed to October 2021. I recently sold it only because we decided to get married on the beach and that dress wasn’t a “beachy” style. But after nearly 3 years, it never turned yellow and I kept it in the fabric garment bag the entire time (no special measures were taken).
