Dress Shopping Experiences as a Smaller Bride?

Casey, on July 6, 2024 at 2:18 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 3

I was hoping to get some honest stories about dress shopping experiences from brides who are more on the petite/extra-small side.

I am just barely five feet tall and under 100lbs.

I'm so worried that I won't be able to try anything on because nothing will look good.

Or that I will not even be able to alter a dress to fit me, as the seamstress might tell me that it would simply require too much cutting and completely compromise the design of the dress.

Or that alterations would be possible but it'll just be too expensive to do (I unfortunately have a very limited budget).

Or that I'll have to shop for a white junior bridesmaid's dress or a larger flower girl dress.

I have been mocked by family for my height and weight for a long time and I am extremely self conscious about showing up at a bridal boutique and being told that there is nothing for me.

I so badly want the "say yes to the dress" experience of going to a real bridal boutique and trying on real wedding gowns. But I'm just so afraid.

Gowns are orderable in size 0 or even 00. Anything can be altered. A lot of gowns are able to be ordered in shorter lengths to start with also.

A good bridal consultant should be skilled enough with clips to give you a good idea of what it will look like. Standing on the pedestal helps with getting an idea of what it will look like hemmed.

    Don't stress!

Congrats on your engagement! People of all sizes can have body insecurities, it can be so hard but remember you are beautiful just the way are. And your fiance loves all of you. As far as the dress shopping goes yes it can be hard to find petite dresses and not all dresses can be massively altered depending on the material and bead work. While not every dress can be altered down multiple sizes a good tailor can work magic. That said I think you can absolutely have a magical dress shopping experience. I d call the shops first so they know you are coming and what you're measurements are, some designers make petite sized wedding gowns so hopefully you will be able to find some salons that carry petite wedding gowns. It also helps to have shoes with the approximate height of what you think you LL wear on your wedding day. If a friend is mocking you about your size that says more about them than you. Go with supportive friends and family and have fun with it. This is an old thread but it may make feel a little better about the shopping experience : https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/any-other-brides-under-5-ft/e679073cc68ead61.html

Wishing you all the best , happy dress shopping!

Maybe check some Asian dress shops. They may have some petite sizes.
