Dressing up a bland venue!! Help!!!

brittney , on April 8, 2011 at 3:07 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 27

Okay, FH and I are on a tight budget. We are paying for the whole thing ourselves, and have 3 kids between the 3 of us. So that being said, I have decided to use the reception are for the ceremony too. It's not really what I want to do, but we really don't have any other options. It is going to be a rustic theme. The crappy thing abotu the venue is we can't put anything on the walls and the wall that I am walking down the aisle to is UGLY!!! The room can be opened up to make the area bigger, but we are stickign with the smaller area. (more)

I bought an arbor to put up where we will stand and I'm going to decorate it with some greenery and flowers to match my bouquets. The problem I'm having is coming up with something to cover those ugly walls!!! I was thinking of getting some type of tall stands or something that I can do like a back drop. Any suggestions? I've attached pictures. The first is the back of the room where I'll be walking to. And the second is the arbor I bought.

You can always drape tulle with white lights in it! you can get bolts of tulle pretty cheap.

Ugh...I'm screwed. I have no clue what I'm going to do. This sucks. They do have a gazebo outside that I have reserved, but the wedding is basically in June at 4 in Texas!!! And for those of you not from around here it is effing hot that time of year. The ceremony I expect to take about 20-30 minutes and then we are doing a sand ceremony with our kids. Should I stick with outside? It'll be about $300 to rent the gazebo, set up chairs and decorate.

I'm from Texas! Yea, 4 is hot!!! Hmmm could you rent some uplighting? Colored lights would be a good way to create a romantic atmosphere.

I love the gazebo idea, but like you said its hot in June. But if you had a quick ceremony later in the evening when the sun is going down it may not be as bad.

I also have a bland wedding venue with walls that are not exactly what I want. So we are using draping to cover them up. The ceiling are low enough for us to use a ladder and attach the draping to fishing wire and let i hang. You could always use the hall have them turn the light down low and use more candlelight to light the room. then maybe the walls aren't as noticeable and have the wedding outside in the gazebo.

Ok... here's an idea for something to cover the walls. You have to construct some tall supports for it to hang from, but it won't be attached to the walls. What about making fabric garlands? You could use any old materials you have around the house - maybe like some older sheets, or fabric from clothes you never wear anymore. If you like the idea, host a crafting night with friends and get them to bring their spare fabrics as well in your wedding colors.

In case it's hard to see in the photo, the idea is here: http://www.shopruche.com/lookbook_holiday10.html

You would need to call a rental company to get a quote on draping... example below...

You could get some pedestals and plants.. or some standing indoor trees.

and I sent you a message.

    Thanks Hayley, you're awesome!

I like the second picture (with the couple) how that draping is. I have a feeling that is going to run me more than I'm willing to spend.

Hmm.. I wonder how hard it would be to build some type of support system out of some PVC piping and attach the fabric to that. I wonder if I'm getting in over my head on this one?!?!?

You can get galvanized bucket full with sand to support your pvc pipe. and then wrap the buckets with a fabric and place flower in the top of the bucket to cover the sand if you need too.

Great idea K&H. I actually won't even really need to cover the buckets, cause I'll be using a lot of the tin pails in my decor. Thank you!

Thank you to everyone else's ideas too.
