Dried Flowers vs. Fresh Flowers

Valerie, on February 19, 2020 at 5:19 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 7

I'm a budget bride, who is adding more and more to my DIY list. I've seen a lot of floral companies who will ship you boxes of fresh flowers in a kit so that you can DIY your own bouquet. However, with all the things on my list, I don't think that I will have time closer to the day of the wedding.

I've been seeing a lot of Pinterest posts for dried flower bouquets and arrangements. I think that they are stunning and unique. However, as I'm doing more research, I'm seeing that the costs of premade dried arrangements are just as much, if not more than fresh arrangements.

How feasible would it be to order a DIY floral kit and dry the bouquets/arrangements in advance of the big day?

Or do you think that the risk of breakage or failed arrangements would be too high?

I'd appreciate any advice or stories from experience on how to do flowers on a budget.

I wouldn’t do it. If I went the dried flower route, I’d want to make sure I knew exactly what I was going to get and ensure that my flowers were dried properly. Just too much could go wrong trying to DIY them and then to potentially end up having to spend more on the backup plan if it didn’t work out.

I’d say the season of your wedding and the specific flowers you want will have the most say on how much your florals will cost, no matter what route you take. Talking to a florist would be the best way to determine which flowers in which season would get you the best bang for your buck. I shopped around and found a florist who worked out of her home and thus, was able to best accommodate my small budget by not having overhead costs. You can also get flowers from Sam’s Club, Costco, and even your local grocery store florist.

Are you opposed to fake bouquets? I ordered my bridesmaids from amazon and they look gorgeous! Then I’m going to get a real one for mine! Dried Flowers vs. Fresh Flowers 1

What other DIY stuff do you have to do? Could you maybe do those things a week or so before and then DIY your flowers the day prior to your wedding? I'm doing this! My bridesmaids and I will chill at the Airbnb with some wine and arrange away! I have 7 bridesmaids plus my mom and mother in law so I don't foresee it taking all that long!

Thanks for the advice! I live in a small, rural town, and while I would love to locally source and hire a florist, they have such high minimums. I hadn't considered grocery stores, so I will definitely look into that!

I actually considered them originally, but surprisingly my fiance spoke up for this part of the wedding. He said that he has never liked fake flowers. I think the ones he's seen haven't been the nicer kind, but maybe I could buy some, make an arrangement, and see if he can tell that they're faux.

I was thinking about DIY-ing my flowers, but I'll also be making the cake. My event is a surprise wedding, and so my friends and family don't know that we're getting married. I'm realizing just how hard it is to do all this stuff by yourself.

Oh wow! How big of a cake are you making? I know the flowers begin to arrive two days before. That gives you two days to do it all. Depending on how elaborate you're going with both the cake and flowers, I think it's definitely doable. Do you have any inspo photos? Is there anyone that knows this is a surprise wedding that could potentially help you?
