Drink question on rsvp cards?

Elizabeth, on February 6, 2019 at 12:55 PM Posted in Planning 0 14
We are having an open bar but we are supplying the liquor, would it be tacky or weird asking what they prefer to drink on the RSVP cards? Just so we don't get 70 bottles of wine and people prefer beer or liqour and are short those but have plenty of wine.

I've never seen this before, but I guess I wouldn't care if I did? Since the guest won't actually be restricted to that choice the day of. But for me, if I drink wine vs. beer vs. liquor depends on the atmosphere, the time of day, the day of the week, and what is served for dinner. So I really wouldn't be able to predict in advance.

Which is true it is hard to say what people will drink in advance I don't know if I would...

I'd look into liquor stores that let you return unopened bottles!

This question just came up recently, and the consensus was basically that it’s not necessarily tacky, but, also not necessarily helpful haha— and a lot of people expressed concerns that they would worry or be concerned that they weren’t allowed to “switch their order” day of, like they wouldn’t be supposed to drink wine if they had checked off that they were beer drinkers.
I certainly can’t commit to a beverage of choice in advance, and my biggest deciding factor is what the specific options are — if you have my favorite type of wine, I’d go for that even if I’m more of a beer drinker. But also, if you don’t have the type of beer I drink, I’m not going to stick with beer if I don’t like your selection! I mostly just think that beverage options are too nuanced to narrow it down to a “check beer wine or liquor”

i definitely agree with the advice to find a place to buy that will allow for returns of unopened bottles. There are a lot of calculators out there or event planning consultants at liquor stores who can help advise you on AVERAGE consumption at events. But do keep in mind that you know your guests best and if you think that your people might be more inclined another way, follow your gut !! (We KNEW we had a bourbon loving crowd, so bought way more bottles than calculators suggested — and rightly so, it WENT! We had barely any leftover)

That does make sense about people being concerned they can't drink the other options because they didn't mark it I could see that happening. I will think more of what our crowds drink during the purchasing to make sure we have enough

I think I this is adorable & helpful (the dancing shoes options made me smile)! Even if people mark two drinks at least you have an idea of what you should get.

I dont think its tacky but may cause some confusion. I would word it differently than the card you posted, instead maybe ask what their favorite drink is? If you have a wedding website, maybe you could add a survey on there or share on social media and change it so only the people invited can see it.

Maybe something on the website like" we're asking your favorite drink and can't guarantee it will be there but do you prefer liquor, wine or beer". If we added it as a question?

I think this is a great idea! Honestly I think most people know what they prefer to drink at weddings so I believe the responses will be pretty accurate

I dont think you need to add the disclaimer that it might not be there if you keep the question vague. Something like "which alcohol is your favorite?" and list the 3 choices. Maybe above the survey add a brief paragraph that you're trying to get a feel for what people like.

I don’t think it’s “tacky,” but I don’t see how it’s helpful. Do I really need to decide what and how much I’m going to drink a month before your wedding? What if I’m bloated that day and decide to drink 3 glasses of wine instead of the 5 beers I put on my RSVP?

I made a survey on my wedding wire website and asked what people would prefer to drink, out of beer, wine, and cocktails/mixed drinks.

I was thinking of doing the same thing but in a way like people do with a song request. But not sure how to word it that we’re having a stocked bar and wonder their drink preference but it’s ok if they want something else once there.
