Dropping First Name

Renee, on October 14, 2021 at 10:56 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 6

Has anyone had any experience with dropping a first name? I go by my middle name and want to drop my first name and take my husband's last name. I have heard that you have to see a lawyer to do this? Has anyone had any experience they could share?

Thanks!

I think it all depends where you live

Each state has different laws on this, but most states require you to petition for a name change through the courts if you’re changing your first name.

I plan on doing this myself. However, with a marriage license/certificate, that only allows you to change your last name. Nothing else. If you want to drop your first name and maiden name, you would have to petition for a name change although. Hope that helps

Are you planning to use an attorney or just do it yourself?

I was going to do it myself. You just need to know the court and county that you need to petition in. Fill out the forms, pay the fees, and show up in court.

I was sort of wondering the same thing, legally my name is Margaret (mother’s name) but have always gone by Megan and I’m wondering how much work that would take to change it
