Dying my dress???

Kristen, on May 14, 2019 at 11:48 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5
Does anyone here know what fabrics do or do not take well to being dyed? I keep revisiting my idea of a pale grey dress. I would definitely pay to have this done, it is not something I’d risk DIYing.

i would also consider just dying the skirt and doing a sort of ombré

for reference here is a photo of my dress (Allure 2716)

I believe you can only dye natural fibers. Synthetic fibers either won’t hold the dye or it I very difficult. If it is 100% silk tulle you should be able to have it dyed more easily. If it is polyester or nylon it might not work.

I spoke with a professional about possibly dip-dying my dress. She said the same thing as Jeana. Only natural fibers take due well. So cotton, wool, or silk. Synthetic fabrics may not take it or make take it unevenly. If you’re unsure try a small piece of the fabric that’s been cut off (for hem) if you have it.

Rit makes dye specifically for synthetic fabrics. It takes longer and is harder to dye, but it can be done. I accidentally bleached a grey dress and was able to fix it. Make sure the fabric can withstand with heat required for dyeing though. The dye had to be at a low boil. If you have the funds, I would find a professional because it can be difficult if you haven't done it before. Definitely practice on the same type of fabric as your dress before doing it on your dress.

Hey Kristin! Your dress is absolutely beautiful! The back is stunning!!

What is making you want to dye it grey? Have you seen a grey dress that you are taking inspiration from?

If it is something you want to do, I would highly recommend discussing this with a seamstress. They will have a better understanding of different materials and will most likely know if your dress will take dye or not.

I just never pictured myself in a white or ivory dress, but I do really love my dress! I think I’m gonna talk to the atelier at my bridal shop and see if she has light grey tulle to maybe envision how it would actually look!
