Early dress hemming-shoe issues?!

Kyra, on December 30, 2022 at 3:03 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

When I first ordered my dress they measured my height with some small heels on(sample ones they had there) and ordered it based on that. They weren't my shoes since I hadn't decided on any yet but I believe they were around 2 inches. I've found shoes I love but they're 3.5 and I'm afraid they won't work with the dress now(fitting is in 2 weeks) but I find it odd that they'd measure exactly with me wearing random shoes as opposed to leaving some room incase since I'm not sure if they did or not. Anyone have experience with this sort of hemming process?

Unless the dress is custom, dresses are usually shipped at a standard length. They may have just measured you to make sure you didn’t need extra length? Or did they specify that they are ordering it for that exact length?

Honestly, I'm not sure which one of those it was. When I first tried it on it was at the floor already so I'm not sure if they were going to be adding or what.

I've always heard that for accurate measurements you should wear desired heel height for fitting/trying on.

So I will have the shoes for the fitting, but when I first purchased the dress I had no idea about shoes since it was a year prior and I was waiting to find the dress for shoes to match not the other way around if that makes sense. I also heard you're supposed to bring them for a fitting which is why I'm a bit confused about what the measuring was about in the original purchasing since nobody was quite sure what shoes I'd be wearing.

Are you tall? If that's the case, then they were probably measuring for extra length.

I don't know for sure, but I think that *may* be considered tall for bridal

Either way, thanks for that! I’ll keep that in mind when I go try it on for my fitting!

That is very strange that any reputable seamstress would do so. They should be hemmed for the specific shoes you will be wearing at the reception. If you have 2” heels and go barefoot at the reception, the dress is hemmed for the heels and it will drag when you take them off. The dress dragging means you and guests will trip on the dress. The gap when it is hemmed properly is not noticeable. What you are describing is a common tactic for in store alterations such as David’s Bridal where they work with the assumption that you as the customer are stupid and don’t know what you need so they can do half-done work and charge you through the nose for it.

They might have just measured your height when you ordered to make sure they didn't need to add on extra length. Most pre-alteration dresses are on the long side since they can shorten easier than lengthen, and bridal shops don't assume you came in with your wedding shoes, especially if you're a year out when you're ordering. I wouldn't stress about an inch and a half though. It won't be super noticeable, and even if it's an issue, a decent seamstress should be able to address it Smiley smile
