Early start- lots of hmu decisions

Kristin, on September 20, 2019 at 3:34 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 13

Hi all! I'm starting my HMU search and want some advice.

My ceremony starts at 11AM, and photog wants all HMU finished by 9AM when we access the venue. That means it's going to be a really early start (and massive time crunch) to get 7 bridesmaids, MOB, MOG and myself finished by then.

Of course I knew this would be an issue when I chose the time, but I'm struggling to decide what to do here. Everyone would hate waking up at 5AM. I'm considering telling them right now that it's a possibility. I would hate for it to change anyone's mind, but I would kind of understand.

I plan on paying for all bridesmaid makeup, but should I let them do their own hair in hopes it will save time? Or is it simply a matter of hiring a ton of artists?

Would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks!

You would have to hire probably 2-3 artists for make-up for ten people, probably at least one more for hair for everyone too. Artists also often charge travel based on the number of artists needed + an additional fee for that early of a start. Letting them do their own hair might save some time, but I can't be certain depending on the abilities of each girl and mirror/outlet space. Are you at all flexible on the time of your ceremony?

Hi. That's a really tight time crunch for sure. My ceremony begins at 1:30 and I have 5 bridesmaids and I am stressing about that!
I think I would just let your bridal party know that although you are paying for their makeup it will be a super early morning and give them the option to do it themselves instead. Same goes for hair. My makeup artist told me to set aside 45 minutes per face. Hairstylist said the same. You would need at least 4.5 hours in that case to get 10 people done. That puts you at 4:30 a.m. I don't think that's reasonable. Can you hire 2 hairstylists and 2 makeup artists and have them all work side by side to get it done?

My HMU team gave me this equation to loosely figure out timing:

(1.5 hours) x (# of bridesmaids) Divided by # of HMU team members

I think the ceremony time is set in stone, unfortunately. We could arrive to the venue later than 9AM, but that means less time for pictures before the ceremony. I may have to decide which is the lesser of two evils.

I'm sure I could definitely hire more artists! That's probably what I'll end up doing, and just accept that the fees will be higher haha

It wouldnt hurt to have more than one HMU artist for the amount of people. However, waking up at 5 isn't the worst thing. My best friend had us do it for her wedding and we made it a party, blasting music, drinking mimosas. It's only one day, so I dont think it's a huge deal to wake up early, but an extra artist should put your mind at ease.

Yeah I'm hopeful the girls would be okay with doing it for one day (or at least keeping any negativity to themselves!)

I've heard a lot of brides say they can't sleep before the wedding anyways. They wake up naturally very early. I agree with this that 5 am won't be terrible.

Yeah I'm not too worried about myself! I agree I probably will be jittery, plus I'm used to getting up super early for work. Only one of my girls could be called a morning person, but I definitely think one day should be fine, and they can keep any negative thoughts away from me haha

My ceremony started at 9:30, I had one hair stylist and one MUA for myself and two bridesmaids for both services and my mom for hair only. We met at the salon at 5:00 finished at 7:15. Back at the hotel by about 7:20 and the photographer arrived at 7:30. I would definitely recommend several artists for that many people. If you hire people who can do both, that may help too so they can jump in and help in whatever needs doing.

I’m the interest of full disclosure I am a morning person, but 5 am doesn’t seem like such a big deal and I’m of the opinion they can suck it up for one day.

It sounds like it may come down to sleep deprivation vs. money. If you can afford to hire an artist/person, then really it isn't much of an issue. If you can't (or are like me and just don't want to spend that much money on MU), then you may have to go with an earlier wake up call. But, I'd suggest doing hair on their own if they're used to doing hair styles - if they aren't, it'll take longer for them to do it because they don't really know what they're doing. Good luck!
