Eastern European Last Names

Courtney, on July 28, 2020 at 11:38 AM Posted in Married Life 0 4
Anyone marrying someone from Eastern Europe- are you going to add an A to the end of your new last name?

My fiancé is from Bulgaria and typically Eastern European names end in A for females. It has been left up to me to decide whether I want to have the same last name as him or add an A. (E.g. Marchenkov / Marchenkova)
I cannot decide whether I want to keep it simple and have the same name as my fiancé or add an A. Getting married in November so I have to decide soon. My fiancé and his family are happy with whatever I want to do, help!

I am keeping my fiancee's American last name, however when we register our marriage in Hungary, I'll take on a form of his name in Hungarian for my ID and passport there.

That is so cool! I'm a fan of unique traditions, so if I were you I would add the A.

What does your name sound like with it? Write it down, say it out loud, until you find which one you like.

Or keep your own name, it's all up to you!

Legally, I’d take his, especially if you plan to live outside of Europe. Could cause too many issues. Around his family, they may address you with the “a” which would be sweet.
