Eco-conscious people: cup dilemma

Dizzy, on August 25, 2021 at 5:14 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 5

Hey all!

So we are DIYing everything for our wedding. I bought some cups off of Amazon while my brain was super fuzzed out. I had searched for recyclable cups and these are NOT going to be recyclable- have faint glitter on them. Major fail.

Thoughts on either sourcing compostable cups (I have a lead on a maybe more affordable source than amazon) or getting glasses from Goodwill/thrift? I love the look of colored glass cups but since we are DIYing everything seems like it could be a pain to transport with everything else (we do have the venue all weekend but still). Do people actually use provided glass cups for everything for those who have done weddings like that?

Or is this just silly to even get new cups (I guess I'd like, donate the other ones to a local soup kitchen?)

Look into rentals in your area. They should be able to deliver and pick up. And you don't need to wash them before returning them.

We don't have room for that in our budget.

Honestly, since you've already purchased them, I'd just go with what you have.

You don't want multi-use glasses unless you have a very very small group because of COVID and frankly would you want to wash them?

You could source the compostable cups, but you already have the ones that aren't recyclable, and they'd still be used if you donated them to a soup kitchen (or whatever) BUT you'd be spending more money, and since you indicated your budget wasn't roomy enough for rentals, I'm guessing that spending extra is not ideal.

Also, be aware that some compostables are only compostable in industrial composting facilities—not hone composting facilities. I would stick with what you have, weighing the environmental cost of shipping those cups back to the seller as well.

The environmental cost of shipping them back or driving around looking for thrifted glasses is almost certainly higher than just using the cups you have, plus they may just get thrown away if you donate them anyways (this happens more than you would think at places that take donations!)
Is your real goal to be environmentally friendly or to look that way? Because that may help your decision…
