Eco-friendly disposable cups?

Lia, on April 12, 2021 at 9:01 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11

Does anyone know of some good eco-friendly disposable cup options? We have about 400 guests invited, so disposable seems to be the route that would be easiest, although using reusable cup options would obviously be the most eco-friendly.

I've heard of corn plastic that is compostable, but upon more research it looks like they only compost in commercial composting facilities.

Biodegradable would seem to be the best route, but I am unaware of good biodegradable cups.

Does anyone know of any good options?

Thanks!

That's so awesome that you're trying to be as sustainable as possible! I'm also trying my best, but it's really difficult since I also want an easy clean-up. I found these cups on amazon that are compostable at home or at a composting facility. There are also different sizes you can choose from. Here's the link: Amazon Wasara Compostable Cups. Hope that helps!

I’m no “eco-expert” but I did find these..... just kind of curious… What happens if some of your guests don’t use the proper recycling receptacles? LOL Is that going to be a day crusher if you see cups in waste bins? Eco-friendly disposable cups? 1

400 guests in August? Holy cow, my venue would never allow that, lol. For safety reasons with Covid, I'd definitely recommend single-use disposable rather than reusable cups in this case. Green Paper Products makes good disposable biodegradable cups. They're not the most aesthetically pleasing because they have a giant green stripe around the bottom, but they definitely fit the bill. I've seen them at work events before and they are sturdy, quality cups

With Covid, disposable single use cups will be the go to for your caterer/bartender. While the idea is good, many guests will likely be unaware to dispose of them in a different bin specifically for biodegradable rather than regular trash.

I only know of biodegradable cups. I've seen them at Albertsons and Smiths! But since you need 400 maybe try AMAZON?? Good luck!

    Thank you!
And yes - honestly it would be a soul crusher for me. I hate using single use plastics, so the ideal situation would be if I could buy some cups that would biodegrade in regular trash! Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be any cups like that in existence unless they’re flimsy and paper-like.
    Thanks again!

We’ll see if my state or venue changes it’s mind with restrictions!! For now, I’ll plan for that amount of guests. We’ll see! Staying hopeful since many people around me are already vaccinated!

I’ve been looking at the green paper products site - I do like their plate options! I still can’t get an answer as to whether those cups they make have to be disposed of separately so that they can be sent to a commercial compost facility. I’ll reach out to them! Thank you!!

Disposable for sure! And yes, I’m thinking along those same lines exactly. They won’t know to throw them in a special bin if they have to be separate from the regular trash. I wish there was a nice biodegradable/compostable option that could just be thrown with the trash!
    Thanks for your input!

There are edible cups. They'd cost a bit more, but may be worth it. I was in a similar situation and decided to spring for reusable glassware. I only have 100 people though.

ETA: sorry I just saw the date on this.
