Edible Centerpieces?

Lara, on January 27, 2015 at 10:54 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 19

So my mother has graciously offered to make our centerpieces to cut down on floral costs. So yesterday she says she found a place that we can get cheap flowers and she's going to get vases, but she also had an idea of putting fruit into the vases - apricots, cherries, plums, etc, nothing that would require peeling, she explained to me, so people could eat the fruit after dinner. My mother is Lebanese so there is always an abundance of fruit available after a big meal. However, this seems a bit odd to me so I wanted to see what you ladies thought...

I've got to say it does seem a bit odd...as a guest, if I saw this, I would think that the fruit was placed there intentionally for visual purposed and not meant to be eaten so I wouldn't take any

I like the look of this when people use like lemons or limes if it fits the theme, but as a guest I would not eat it even if it was advertised as edible. Sorry.

I'm also concerned about how this would play out. Seems like they would need to be assembled the day of or day before and does your MIL want to be doing that?

Edit: Just saw it's your mom, who I think would have even more to do leading up to the wedding.

I think it would look nice, but I wouldn't eat it.

I have nothing to offer except that my mother is Lebanese as well! She was born in Lebanon and moved here as a toddler. I have uncles over there as well!

I don't think I would eat it either. I would think that it would be part of the centerpiece. Maybe you could put a little sign that says your guests can eat it after their dinner? I would save on clean up afterwards!

Agreed, I probably wouldn't eat it, but I do think it would look nice. I recently saw a wedding that had artichokes as part of their centerpieces which actually looked really cool, so there's another thought on cutting down the florals cost.

@Elyse, I have talked to my mother about that over and over, she insists it will work out, though I'm VERY skeptical. I have a bit more time to convince her that we should just leave it to the florist. Especially since my parents want to host the RD.

I haven't yet! I will go soon though. I need to meet my baby cousin! My mom went there about 10 years ago for my grandfather's funeral. Apparently he was a famous politician. He had over 800 attendants and 8 priests at his funeral!

You should go as soon as you can, it's so much fun! I want to take FH, hopefully in October or possibly next summer. That's really cool about your grandfather, I would bet that my family there knows him.

This is my mother's inspiration but not to have fruit inside the vase, but flowers instead.

I've seen fruit in centerpieces and it looked beautiful... I guess those that won't eat it, won't eat it, but the Lebanese side of your family will probably appreciate the fruit! LOL

I love the look, but I wouldn't eat them unless it was announced or some old lady relative encouraged me to (but then I'm not Lebanese). As long as they're not in the water with the flower, why not? A bowl of cherries could look really cute and I would definitely eat those if I was told I could.

If I was told that the fruit was for eating I'd totally have some! Sounds like a cool idea! I like it.

But for those that are coming to your wedding who aren't Lebonese they probably won't know that the fruit is for eating, so you'll have to have a sign, or annouce something... which feels awkward. You shouldn't have to tell people to eat the centrepiece.

So I guess it comes down to your guests. Do you think they would eat the fruit?

I think the Lebanese people will (probably about 30% of the guests), during my mingling, I can probably spread the word and have my friends do the same. It won't be any cut fruit, so it won't be gross if they are out from early afternoon until dinner.
