Elopement in Greece 2021

Emily, on January 14, 2021 at 10:20 AM Posted in Planning 1 5

Hi all --

I am just curious on everyone's thoughts about this global pandemic. My FH and I got engaged in on Christmas Eve of 2019. We wanted a long engagement and didn't even think about the pandemic and luckily planned our wedding for September 2021... to Greece. Just us two and basically an elopement, We are planning to have a reception back in our home town in October 2021 when we get back from our trip.

However -- buying our flights and booking everything is so exciting because it's finally coming and I've waited forever for this... but I'm getting nervous about restrictions/etc.

We have insurance and our wedding planners in Greece have been truly amazing. But just wondering what other's thought are about things getting a bit less strict. My FH is an essential worker and someone had COVID & gave it to him. So, we both had it and it's no joke. I don't want to come off insensitive because it's a terrible virus. I think I'm just looking for some positivity or some type of hope that will bring me some sense of ease.

Let me know your thoughts!

Hi Emily! The plans sound romantic and beautiful! I think it’s smart your reception is a few weeks after your return as likely a quarantine period will be required. If you’re eligible for a vaccine, may be a good idea to receive it (of course this is a personal decision). I think you are smart to think of covid aspects as in my personal opinion, it will be better by that time, but not gone. I would prepare yourself for guest limits to still be going on and still some restrictions of social distancing, increasing airflow, etc. Praying for all brides covid gets conquered quickly ❤️

Were looking to book our honeymoon in October and hopeful that travel will be much better by then. The thing that probably will be required is testing before flights or maybe vaccination proof. Not sure if you saw but the US is going to start requiring negative test results before any international flights heading back to the US.

Hi Emily! I think there's still plenty of time between now and October, and that an elopement in Greece sounds incredibly romantic!! 🥰

Hopefully there were be plenty of vaccine access by then and plenty of testing available so you can retest right before your trip!

For the celebration at home I agree with Katie that it would be smart to still think through social distancing measures and a smaller guest list. Smiley heart

I think the biggest issue is that the vaccine may be available, but that doesn't mean people are willing to have it. In France between 50 and 60 percent of the population is against it. Greece has started vaccinations. They hope to be open by the summer. They have suffered a lot from lack of tourism so I would say that they will open asap. BTW amazing time of year to visit. The Islands can be cool in the evenings, but the day is nice and warm. You may also consider Cyprus, Malta or Turkey if you are looking for the same Island vibe with less restrictions.
