Empty Dance Floor Dread

MrsCollins, on May 20, 2016 at 11:11 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 51

I have been to multiple weddings where hardly anyone danced and I do NOT want that to be my wedding. Anyone else have this fear? Am I overthinking it. We have an open bar and some fun people but I just don't know if they will dance. I think I am basing this off of past weddings where the dancing didn't go over well. I just want everyone to have a good time.

It 100% depends on your DJ/band. Get a good one. We had, at most, 15 people sitting during dancing at one point. 185 attended.

I really think it depends on your guests. Don't stress, I'm sure everyone will have a great time!

eta- and what M said, a good dj!

My DJ told me that people tend to follow the bride/groom's lead. If you are on the dance floor, most likely the guests will follow.

I'm worried about it too, honestly. Mostly because the dinner and the reception are in two different rooms. The dinner is up in the river house and the reception, down in the grand hall. They're able to put 6 tables down in the grand hall, but that's it in order to accommodate the DJ and dancing space. I'm worried everyone is going to hang out up in the river house all night.

I agree with m. Your DJ/band has everything to do with getting people up and moving and keeping that energy going.

ETA : absolutely booze helps. I am the most spectacular dancer in my mind when I drink and everyone wants to dance with me (in my mind)! But truly, alcohol + music = dancing

If I have a beer in my hand and music is playing, I will be on the dance floor. Invest in your DJ/band, keep the liquor flowing, and you'll be golden.

I worried too and even wrote a note on my DJ questionnaire that said he would really have to read the crowd as their may not be any dancers. Our dance floor was packed! Get a good DJ, and dont be too controlling on must have or do not play songs. Just let him do his job.

@Michelle that makes me feel better knowing that you questioned whether people would dance, and then they did. It gives me hope Smiley smile

If your crowd has some clubbers, think about the songs that always get them on the dance floor then. It'll work at a wedding too. Our 'must play' list has at least a dozen songs that I know all my old friends won't be able to resist.

But remember that even if people don't dance, they can still be having fun. No worries if people just want to enjoy the tunes, great food and free booze with their friends and families!

The DJ makes all of the difference. Don't go with a typical wedding DJ. Look for one who does proms.

We're having a smallish wedding (50 people), with many older guests who wont dance. Many of FH's single friends won't dance either so I'm dreading the sparse dance floor already. FH doesn't really dance either so we'll see...

OMG prom DJ's are the worst.

Go with an ACTUAL DJ. The guy we hired does a lot of club shows, so he played the music we liked but it wasn't just one song after another.

Prom dj, lol. Yeah, proms are the height of class and fun.

This happened to us for a good portion of our reception. A lot of our "fun" friends were at the bar drinking & mingling for a long time. They definitely took advantage of the open bar but I was upset that people weren't dancing as much as I thought they would. I was on the dance floor with my girls most of the night. The dance floor only got packed the last hour of the night once everyone was already drunk. People were still having fun though & said it was the greatest wedding they've been to, so I got over it.

I am a little concerned about this - FH and I aren't really fans of much dance-able music, but we are trusting the professionals (the band) to balance our musical preferences with things that will get people on their feet.

We have alot of older guests so we are throwing in a good mix of good oldies that make you want to dance to hopefully get everyone up, but when I drink I am a bad dancing machine but I know I will be having fun!
