Empty Hourglasses??

Kassie, on March 22, 2015 at 4:25 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 14

Okay, so I've looked for some "fill your own" hourglasses, and holy crap they are over $100. I'm thinking about making 4 hourglasses and filling them with colored gems, or stones like what you put in a fishtank or something. I want to make the points hourglasses from Harry Potter, I just can't think of a way to make them that would look good, but still be pretty cheap (and preferably, not fragile x.x) any suggestions ladies??

ETA: the hourglasses are for show, not function if I make them how I want Smiley smile I'd just fill the bottom with some, and then the top with some and close off the middle

Why do you need to fill an hourglass? Maybe I am alone on this but I think those sand ceremony type things are just gimmicks.

this is made from soda bottles and wood.

eta: a wood bead in the center to cover the soda bottle tops, 2 round pieces of wood and the decorative pieces.

@Allison-not for ceremony, for reception decorations Smiley smile I'm having a Harry Potter themed wedding and have been thinking of ways to bring some of that stuff into the reception, the points hourglasses as centerpieces is one of those ways Smiley smile

Have you seen the Pinterest link of someone cutting liquor bottles to make glasses? Here is a link to website I found that talks about safer ways to do that. You caould do that with wine glasses from the DollarTree - use glass adhesive (craft store, ask them about it, they might have to order it), and then build the other parts around it.

@Future Mrs Hall- I saw that one in my search Smiley smile , I've also seen this one ( http://www.harrypotterpartyideas.com/the-props/harry-potter-hour-glass )

I'm concerned about the frame for the hourglasses, since I'm not that crafty or very good with woodworking. I don't like the frame on the one I just listed (I feel like it's too big) but foam may be my safer bet...idk

@Doublej079- I've seen those types of tutorials floating around, the idea of fire and acetone scares the crap outta me, lol. I'm very clumsy, so I'm not sure how that would work out.....

ETA: maybe I'm just a chicken...lol I'm so concerned about spending money and things turning out badly (which happens a lot when I try to DIY, it take a lot of tries)

OMG sorry for my snarkiness then! I love the Harry Potter theme! I would start thinking of other centerpieces that might be a little easier. Do you have a pinterest board? I would love to follow it if you do!

    Love HP!

Haha you're fine, it was a misunderstanding Smiley tongue I do have a pinterest board Smiley smile https://www.pinterest.com/kassiejay2011/harry-potter-wedding/ it's more of my brainstorming board, but it's got some GREAT ideas Smiley smile I've been thinking of other things, but none of them seem easy, mainly because I want each table to be a bit different from the others rather than all the same, but I'm starting to feel like that's not going to happen Smiley tongue I had thought about naming each table after a place (Hogwarts, the Burrow, etc) and placing things on that table that relate (some model of the castle, the flying car, etc) but I feel like that's going to end up adding up to WAY too much money, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do Smiley smile

@ Future Mrs Hall- Haha that was actually on my pinterest board, but I'm not sure if I'm going to have escort cards, I'm not sure what all I'm going to use to decorate the reception hall.

You can get the round pieces for the top and the bottom at a hardware store, same with the three pieces that hold up the top and the bottom - the store will even cut them for you (at Home Depot and Lowe's). Spray paint them, use wood glue, tada! DIY is not as bad as you think! The website link also has a less scary version of the acetone/fire method (which, even for someone experienced, can be scary!), so check that out.

What if you just stuck with the color schemes of the 4 houses on the tables? You would have some repeats but it would make things a bit simpler. How crafty are you? You could also make one wand as the centerpiece for each table. I.e. snapes, ron's broken one, harry's, elder wand, so on and so forth. Then put some simply flowers around it to hid the stand it is on.

Have you looked at craft stores? There has to be a plastic thing like a chemical beacor or something that you could glue together 2 of them. Try a hobby shop too. Id also recommend googling chemical or chemistry sets and see whats in them. Maybe games with large hour glasses? Games by james?

@Aliison I like that Idea, I may do a little bit with the wands, but I'm not sure.

@Mrs Cheapskate- I've looked at Michael's and Hobby Lobby for shapes that could make an hourglass and haven't seen any, but maybe I wasn't looking hard enough, I'll be back up near them later this week, maybe I'll try again
