Engagement Package Scam????

Terra, on April 17, 2011 at 7:08 PM Posted in Planning 0 35

I was recently called by a man named William who told me that I had won an engagement package. It included various things including an all inclusive vacation, wedding bands, and engraved champagne glasses for our wedding. He said all my fiance and I have to do is go to an hour and a half long cooking demonstration at some hotel in Indianapolis. Is anyone else getting any calls like this? Could this actually be for real?

Got a call like this too saying a won a prize from a bridal show I never went to. It is a scam to buy kitchen crap. Google it and you will see they have tons on complaints.

I think your instincts are right -- there are some scams like this for various products or real estate etc... for one thing - if you had actually "won" something, why would they make you sit through some cooking class in order to get it? if it were a prize, wouldn't a fun cooking class just be part of the gift -- or not mandatory at all? i would imagine that if you asked some additional (pointed) questions, and just let him know you would like to research his company (and check the better business bureau) prior to moving forward . . . you would find out pretty quickly whether it is on the up and up...

I got a similar call which they got my information from the bridal show. I regretted giving them my info. But I never went and they stopped calling.

I went to a bridal show in Oklahoma and got a call that I had won toasting flutes and a trip to various locations and such. I went and watched a cooking demonstration and got my flutes and voucher for a free weekend getaway. My MOH had won the same thing the year before. It was not a scam here and the demonstration was also at a hotel in Oklahoma City. Do you know what the cookware is called. If its the same as mine, I would say it is legit.

The cookware is actually really awesome that they demonstrate. I would have bought them if I had the money.

I got a call from someone about this from a company called Celebrity China and Crystal. They told me I had won an engagement package too and would receive free toasting glasses, engagement rings, and a hotel/vacation package. My fiance and I went ahead and went to it not really knowing what it was. We had to sit through an hour presentation about the cookware and all its many functions which was quite boring lol. But they did give us the toasting glasses and 3 days/2 nights free hotel vouchers at any location that was listed (Which we do plan on using). The wedding rings were just something you had to send in for and they looked cheap so we didn't do that. If we had bought a cookware package (which were nice and they make it pretty enticing) we could have gotten a Caribbean cruise out of the deal, but since the package was $1400 dollars we couldn't justify to ourselves spending that kind of money on cookware right now..or maybe ever! Heh.

Actually, if it's the simplicity gourmet one, it's because they try to pressure you into buying. I said sure, but hten cancelled ASAP and still got the free vacation Smiley winking I didn't get offered all that stuff though, so that one could be a scam. If it's simplicity gourmet, give it a shot, but dont buy anything... its SOO expensive. lol. just ask for the prize you were promised. worst case, it's an hour wasted.

Ok well maybe I will just look into it a little bit more. The presentation isn't for about four more weeks, so I have some time to ask more questions and research it more. Thanks everyone for the advice though! You've all been very helpful!

We went to one of these. We declined the cooking products but we still received a vacation package. At the time, I was still under 21 so we couldn't take the vacation. My brother and his wife went. They had a great time. Not sure if its the same company, but if I were you I would do some investigation before saying yes or no.

I got the exact same call but it was from Dinner for 2 and Royal Prestige. I googled the phone number that called and was listed on a few sites as a scam so I didn't go. I've heard that if you say no you still get the package but I was worried about my ability to say no. Plus, we would have had to drive almost 2 hours so we skipped.

It's real, I have bought Royal Prestige cookware before and would recommed it to everyone!! The vaca deal is real too, all you have to pay is airfare and put a $100 deposit down (for incidentals) which you get back like a week after your trip (as long as you don't damage the hotel room). The wedding bands are cool, limited selection but you just pay $20 shipping and handling. (I got the appraised and they really are like a $600 value). The champange flutes are another $20 S&H but they are just glass and I did not bother with them. and then they give you like his and hers aprons, a spoon holder and two knifes (which rock btw). There really is NO obligation to buy anything, they cook you dinner, you watch their presentation then they give you your packet and you leave. I would recommend going just for the free stuff.

Terra, how long until you turn 21? The one I was called about you had like 8 months to use it.

It's good for one year after you register the voucher (so don't go online and put in the code until your ready lol I made that mistake) it will have a registration deadline usually about one year after the date of the show, so basically you have two years. You can't take the vaca until your 21 since they include unlimited alcohol. so, if your gonna be 21 within the next two years go for it, otherwise you can try to sell it/give it away.

He said we have eighteen months, so I would turn twenty one within those eighteen months. I just didn't know if we would have to wait or not?

When you register it (you have to pay the $100 before you can get the available dates) they will send you a list of available dates, then you pick one and your all set. So i'm thinking if you wait till right before the registration deadline then the dates they give you should be after you 21st. (you will also need passports) But after all this you really are getting an amazing vaca for wicked cheap Smiley smile
