I’m having my engagement party on the 19th of may. When should people rsvp by?

Let the host decide this. The couple doesn't host their own engagement party.

Whenever you need numbers for catering?

Agree. You don't host your own engagement party

Everything the pp's said. Hosting your own party in honour of yourself is not good manners.

Okay I never said I’m hosting it. My sister is so when should she have people rsvp by? I though this was supposed to be a helpful websit for beginners instead it’s a bunch of people bashing you...

Hi Casey! Is there a deadline that your sister needs a final headcount by in order to finalize her plans? (Chairs, food, decor, etc.)

If there is no hard deadline, I'd just make the RSVP date 1-2 weeks before the party similar to a bridal shower so that your sister has time to reach out to guests who did not respond to confirm their attendance. It also gives your sister time to adjust plans based on the headcount!

No one was "bashing you", just telling proper etiquette which is what this site is for. People will answer questions based on what is proper eiiquette for the most part here, you will see that as you look through the threads. The way you worded your question, "I'm having my engagement party" seemed to imply you were hosting it. But to answer your question, if the party is being catered, see when the caterer needs the final head count and set the RSVP date by that. If it's not being catered I would say 1-2 weeks before the party should be plenty of time, depending on who/how the food is being handled.
