We didn't have one because we got engaged right before covid shutdowns started, but my parents were planning on having a small BBQ at their house and invite my family and my FH's family.

I don't really think so or really consider it an engagement party. His mom just cooked a nice meal for a family dinner and we just went out for pho with my family.

We got engaged *at* a party, and therefore did not have one.

    They aren't obligatory.

We got engaged on Christmas 2020, my moms planning a BBQ for the Spring/Summer with FH's family and my family just so everyone can properly meet and hang out.

My cousin got engaged in October, my aunt is also planning a small get together at a local brewery when it warms up, just so we can all celebrate properly

We didn't have one, nor do we know anyone else who did. I've only ever heard of them on Law and Order.

We didn’t have one. They’re not mandatory but it’s totally up to you if you want 1.

We threw an engagement brunch for all our parents grandparents and bridal party to meet! It was small and at our house. But it still felt nice to have some normal wedding festivities during covid

Ours was going to be at a game bar that had private party rooms (think darts, shuffleboard, pool, etc.). I'm super bummed we didn't have one, it was unknowingly scheduled a few months into quarantine when everything was shut down.

You definitely don't *have* to have one, but if you're not planning to invite all your friends/family to your wedding, it might be good way to celebrate with them nonetheless?

We didn't have one. We got engaged at the very end of October 2020 and are getting married this April. Right after the engagement was my 30th birthday and then a month later Christmas and then New Years and my cousin's birthday and wedding planning and Valentine's Day and we just moved in together 2 weeks ago.... Way too much stuff going on to think about another party and it wouldn't have been what we may have wanted because of COVID anyway. Also, that's just really not something that's common in my area or among our friend groups so we didn't really think about it. When I asked FH if he wanted one he just looked at me in confusion and asked, "What is that, like, a bridal shower thing?" We may have decided to have one if we were having a longer engagement, but it honestly seemed like just unnecessary work for another party that we didn't have time for or really care about.

We have rented a space out at our favourite local bar and are putting on platters for food, a cheap local photographer and a cake. We have invited a bunch of people to the engagement party to celebrate with us who will not be getting an invite to the wedding (as a lot of them are more acquaintances or casual friends). No expectation of gifts.

Maybe a little over the top for some, but our parents really wanted us to throw a party (they are contributing to the cost) and celebrate so we were more than happy to go along with it.
