Someone else would host the party for you.
My parents hosted ours at their house. They invited our immediate family members (parents, aunts/uncles), some family friends (who are basically family), and our bridal parties + their significant others. Maybe 30 people total.
It was a no gifts event.
We had drinks and appetizers (charcuterie board style) and it began at 7 p.m.

I'm sure there's all different kinds of engagement parties!

My parents are throwing our engagement party. We are doing a dinner with our party and aunts and uncles. We are having a little candy bar as well.

As PP's mentioned, generally someone else volunteers to host an engagement party. As with any party, food and drinks are often involved and maybe even games. It can be as formal or as casual as you'd like it to be Smiley smile

I asked my grandma and mom to put a dinner on for us. I'm a liiiiiittle bit of a control freak and they didn't get on it in the amount of time I thought they should so I made reservations and sent out invites with my grammys number as RSVP. I just did a dinner with our immediate families (siblings, parents, and grandparents) as we'd been dating 8.5 years and they'd never met.

I realize all these people are going to say "you should let someone offer to throw you a party" but if you just want to celebrate and aren't expecting gifts or anything, I say its fine to throw yourself a dinner or party. Just do it soon after you get engaged. Ours was like 2 months after.

We didn't have a typical engagement party as we are both older and didn't see a party being necessary but we did want our parents to meet and be acquainted before the big day so we took both sets of parents out for an engagement dinner before the shower so by the time the shower came, no one was awkward around each other and they were also able to help with introductions.

We hosted our own engagement party with our parents help. We did an afternoon at our local park. We rented a park shelter, had drinks and snacks. We had pictures of us from our trip (he proposed on a trip to Ireland) around the shelter with decorations. A few people brought us gifts (booze mostly because that is how we roll) and I was so surprised by that! we had said we just wanted an excuse to throw a party- which was true. We shared the booze with our friends and family that afternoon. Engagement party 2

I technically didn't do the traditional Engagement party. my FH didn't care for the idea so I did a "Engagement Party for the girls" so all the girls on both sides of the family came to the restaurant and we just hung out and this was the first time our family got to mingle... now that I think of it, it kinda sounds like a bridal shower 1.0. 😂
