I think you can have it whenever you want. I like the idea of having it sooner after your engagement and not too close to the wedding.

We got engaged last March, had a formal-ish engagement party for 40 at a restaurant in August. It was amazing. We went all out because we’re eloping to Hawaii next March. The party was fun to focus on and celebrate while waiting through this 2 year engagement! Now it’s only a year away!
