What are thoughts on engagement parties? Are they necessary?

They're not necessary. Totally optional, though they are a fun idea!

Nope! I've been to 2 and they were basically just a standard house party, which was fun. We didn't have one, and don't feel like we missed out on anything.

Not necessarily unless there's something specific you're trying to accomplish (i.e. parents/families meeting for first time). Personally, I would rather spend that money on the wedding instead!

Not necessary. But can be nice parties. When a couple has been engaged without a date for years, Engagement Parties are nice 9-12 months out, or less . Often, after securing a date. People who were friends when the couple became engaged may be 2-5 years and 2000 miles away, and no longer in the picture. This one says, we are actively planning our wedding. It can be just a nice home or restaurant dinner party, or a cookout, and by tradition is not a gift giving party. It is not uncommon for WP to be announced at the party, having been asked privately before and said yes. After a long engagement, people need to get a little energy again.

We had a rather fancy one due to our long engagement (2 years) and the fact that we were planning to get married alone in Hawaii. We wanted to celebrate with our family and friends but didn’t want to worry about the expense of a big “reception” after our costly wedding/honeymoon. It worked out perfect for us!

    I didn't have one, but I wish I did.

We skipped it entirely. We got engaged *at* a party, and also we had a short engagement.

My fiancee and I were never interested in hosting an engagement party, not really necessary I feel, and it's basically just a glorified house party.

I’ve heard multiple times “they’re just a way to get money.” In my experience, that has largely been true. One couple even admitted that to me. The amounts we’ve given for the engagement party, shower gift, and wedding gift for couples really add up. We didn’t want an engagement party and couldn’t have one due to Covid-19, but we did consider it briefly as a way of getting a bit of that back. It’s terrible motivation, though, so we quickly scrapped that idea. (Just being honest, don’t attack me lol)
