Engagement Photo Session Help!

Stephanie, on July 1, 2019 at 4:00 PM Posted in Parties and Events 0 17

My fiance and I have our engagement photo session this weekend however I'm a little worried. We don't have a photographer yet for our actual wedding day but we are using this start up company in NYC that does free pop up shoots around the city, they offer 30 min slots and you only pay for the prints you like. They sent an email saying that we should bring change of clothes and props and now I'm a little worried because I did not plan for a change of clothes and I don't have a clue about what types of props to use. I figured 30 minutes would be too short of a time for a clothes change. So I guess what I am asking is did you do a change of clothes for your engagement photo session and or did you bring props? What were you favorite poses? I want to make the most out of our session and would appreciate any advice.

We did some formal and some casual. The only prop we used was my fiancé’s cowboy hat! Here are some of my favorites for inspiration. Check Pinterest too!

I love your photos! Maybe we need a casual option. The only thing is I wouldn't even know where we would change at our location. But thank you for sharing!

I agree that a 30 minute session is too short for a wardrobe change. That would take up too much of your already limited time. As far as props, some people bring signs with their new last name or wedding date (if you plan to include an engagement photo in your save the dates), ring boxes, or bouquets. The only prop that we used was a sign for our dog. Definitely not a necessity though. Our favorite shots were candids of us just hanging out, not so much posed shots or a ton of focus on my engagement ring.

I didn't change outfits. I think it's ok not to change outfits. It's just something couples do to have different photos

We did an outfit change, but we also had a 2 hour engagement shoot. I wouldn't worry about an outfit change for only 30 minutes. We also didn't use any props; just used the environment around us. I haven't gotten my pictures back, but I'm confident they'll look fantastic, even without props.

The more I think about it the more I am not going to stress, out photos are going to be in a public area near the Brooklyn bridge so I'm sure changing will take at least half of our shoot time, it seems a bit unnecessary to me. Thank you!

Thanks, I might make some quick little signs and I guess my ring can always double as a prop too.

We did a casual and formal like Courtney posted, and we pretended we were guests at a nearby hotel and walked in and found a community bathroom off to the side to change in. No one questioned us. I agree that 30 minutes isn't very long.. if you aren't interested in changing, then you don't have to. Just inform your photographer. The only "prop" we used was our dog in a few photos. If props aren't your thing then you don't have to use any either. Ultimately, what you want, vision and say is how the photographer should shoot!

We used the first letter of my FH's last name for a select few of then! Our outfit change was super quick. Casual vs. Dressy, we both ended up loving our more casual outfit so I definitely recommend Casual if you think you only have time for one.

I had an one hour session and only wore one outfit and had no props and I felt our session went great! (I’ve only gotten one photo back but I honestly feel they were amazing due to how my photographer was reacting the whole time) Honestly even with an hour the session flew by so fast I didn’t feel I’d have time to change. Part of me also didn’t want to risk loving a pose but hating an outfit like in previous professional photos I had taken.

Honestly if you were only planning on one outfit and no props don’t feel pressured to change it, go with what you want! If you want props some cute options might be the letter of the last name or a sign with your wedding date!

We wore baseball jerseys and then changed to nicer clothes. Our props, then, followed our wardrobe - baseball caps and gear. For the nicer clothes, we didn't use props.

If you want ideas for poses, Pinterest is your best friend. Create a board and go over the kinds of poses you think you and your partner would be comfortable with. This may make

Sorry... this may make you more comfortable because you wont have a lot of time to describe what you like and how the photographer works. For example FH and I are more goofy and like candid shots more than heavily romantic and posed shots. If you want a prop, you can bring a flower, or some sparkling cider (can't have alcohol on the street) and two champagne flutes. It's quick, transportable, and gives you something to do with your hands. I was just pinning engagement shoot ideas before I came on here!

Thanks everyone, I think I’m going to check out Pinterest and see what poses we like. I guess it won’t hurt to bring a change of clothes in case. Sounds like a casual option might be worth it too. I appreciate all the advice.
