Engagement photos: yes or no?

allie_bean, on March 17, 2016 at 1:58 PM Posted in Planning 0 71

Hi guys! How many of you got engagement photos taken? If you didn't, did you regret it? I am looking into booking photographers now, and one that me and FH really like has a package that includes them, but the photographer is also willing to give us a discount if we don't want the engagement session. I was never really that fond of the idea personally, but I am unsure if I will regret not having them done. What's everyone's thoughts? Love them or hate them?

I've been going back and forth over having them as well.. because i was always planning on using them for save the dates but after the past few weeks of save the date nightmare posts i was thinking about cutting them out since majority of my guests are local.... I will probably end up doing them just because!

We got ours done in Paris and I will treasure them as a reminder of that trip and our engagement (we left a few days after he proposed) forever. Even if they're not sentimental, it's a great way to see how you interact with your photog and get to know his style in advance.

I'm going to do them, we already booked them but just waiting to do them. I figured it's a one in a lifetime thing and we want to use them for invitations. It's also a chance for family picts since we will be including our son

We got them done and I'm so glad we did because as a result we wound up going with a different photographer. They came back and FH was very disappointed in the quality so we decided to make the change. It would have been way worse if we didn't know beforehand and were disappointed in our wedding photos. I say do them just for the peace of mind.

We skipped them and saved money on our wedding photography package in doing so, I'm not saying all photographers do that though but ask. I don't miss them, we have the wedding photos and that was the important aspect.

Ours are scheduled for the beginning of next month. I think it'll be nice to have some more casual (than the wedding) nice photos of us.

Way too late for save the dates (invites have already gone out and we've gotten back positive rsvps for 65 so far), but couldn't schedule earlier them for too much earlier because I just got my engagement ring a week ago.

I'd say it depends on how big of a discount you'll get for not purchasing them.

We are on a really tight budget, and photography is expensive. Currently we can only afford a 2hr package from the cheapest, good, photographer in the area. (Sure we could probably afford a longer time frame from an amateur, but in that case we might as well just have a friend do it, y'know?)

That package comes with an engagement session, but the photographer told me that she could substitute an extra hour at the wedding for the engagement session.

I'd rather have the extra hour than pictures from before the big day.

If you could really use the savings, but still want some "engagement" photos, maybe see if a friend with a nice camera could take some for you? I have a really nice camera and tripod, and our plan is to go to the Canyon near by and take some photos ourselves. They won't be professional quality, but I'd rather the ones at the wedding be professional than the engagement ones.

After the wedding, you'll probably look at your engagement photos only occasionally, whereas your wedding day pictures you will cherish forever--and any children you may have will also cherish those a lot more.

Once you're married no one really cares about the engagement pictures.

But, if you won't be saving that much, then you might as well go for it. They are a great way to get to know your photographer and make sure you love their style.

I wasn't sure if I wanted them either, but one thing that stuck in my head was our photographer saying "I recommend then because it helps you get comfortable about being me and being photographed". FH and I are quite camera shy and we want the photos to be as nice and relaxed as possible... We have the engagement session planned for next month Smiley smile

We got them and it was a nice excuse to get professional pictures taken with each other. It's a luxury that we wouldn't even consider without an occasion. Now we have a nice canvas on our wall that I get to look at every day.

We're getting them done because how often do we have an excuse to get pro photos done? And I really want us to have some practice working with a pro photographer and getting to know ours before the wedding, so those portrait photos can be as good as possible.

We just got our engagement photos back and we love them! It gave us a chance to be creative and really show our goofy personalities in less formal pictures. Plus, they make great gifts. We got prints for parents and grandparents. The engagement session was included in our wedding package, along with Save the Dates. The photographer was willing to substitute other things for the engagement session, but I'm really glad we did the engagement session!

We did them and I'm really happy we did! We did a small session, only about 20 pictures. I wanted to do them because we don't take pictures together very often, so it's nice to have some that were professionally taken.

We had a friend do them that had a nice camera and knew how to edit photos. It was definitely worth doing them for free, but I'm not sure it would have been worth paying for them. Our friend did a great job and I'm glad we have some nice photos of the two of us now.

We did them and I love them. I'm really nervous about being in front of the camera and it helped me a lot to get to know our photographer and to see how he works and how we work together.

We used the pictures on our video STD, our website, the guestbook and I'm using them for thank you cards for gifts we get before the wedding.

If you are not nervous about pictures and are comfortable around your photographer, I think you can save the money though.

We're doing them primarily since it comes included in our photo package. We're using this to get to know the photographer more as well since the wedding day will be a bit hectic and I want a certain feel for the pictures.
