Engagement photos: yes or no?

Hi guys! How many of you got engagement photos taken? If you didn't, did you regret it? I am looking into booking photographers now, and one that me and FH really like has a package that includes them, but the photographer is also willing to give us a discount if we don't want the engagement...

Hi guys! How many of you got engagement photos taken? If you didn't, did you regret it? I am looking into booking photographers now, and one that me and FH really like has a package that includes them, but the photographer is also willing to give us a discount if we don't want the engagement session. I was never really that fond of the idea personally, but I am unsure if I will regret not having them done. What's everyone's thoughts? Love them or hate them?

I say skip. Use photos from your relationship. Overly posed photos in the same few outfits is sort of overkill and not that special compared to pictures that were taken during real events in your relationship.

I always wanted a family picture of FH and I with our 2 dogs that isn't from the wedding. We are doing that instead of an engagement shoot.

We are getting them done! I love the idea especially because we really don't have many good photos together. I'm planning on using them for save the dates. I see all these engagement photos online and know I would regret not taking them! There are so many cute ideas out there. It's really up to you though!

I was in the same situation. Personally I didn't want them but our photographer insisted and we didn't put much thought into our location and outfit. When we got our photos it was the best thing we did. They turned out amazing and it made me feel comfortable with our photographer

We did not do engagement photos because we had some professional photos of just the two of us done about a year before we were engaged, which I loved. We were able to use one of those photos for our save-the-dates. I don't think I'll miss not having engagement photos. I figure the only thing I won't have is pictures of the ring, but I'll get those in at the wedding. Plus there was a cost savings to not doing them.

Awesome! Thank you all so much for the suggestions. Seems like my fiancé and I have a lot to think about! I'm definitely appreciating all the feedback!

We will be taking them next month. I wanted them for several reasons one, a memory to look back on, two we wanted to do a display of our engagement pictures at the wedding, and lastly we want to make photo albums for our parents with them.

If you don't have any plans to use them and it isn't something you really want, I'd skip them.

Skipped them to save money. I don't regret it, because i knew saving the funds was more important. that said, if we had the money to spare this would probably be something I wanted.

I'm so glad we did ours. FH's friend is a photographer and did ours for us. We are using one of them for our STD's and the rest are just nice to have. Plus it was fun to do with him.

I did them and absolutely love them! One of my BMs is a photographer and did them as a gift to FH and I. If that wasn't the case, I'd have definitely worked it into my photography package.

We are skipping them. A- we don't have the extra money. B- we just aren't interested in a professional photo shoot. We would rather take goofy selfies and use those. But we are kind of a goofy couple anyways, so it fits our personalities.

I loved ours but one other thing to consider, the engagement session is another way for the Photographer to get an idea how you photograph together. It could be a simple as "right" vs. "left" side. Or how your chemistry works together naturally. This session is a great way to determine what will work best for your wedding.

    We skipped it.

Do not regret it. He's not big into taking photos. I think it would have felt forced and not fun for us.

We are planning to do them next month. My fiance was actually really into the idea and brought it up before I did! I know that several photographers I've been researching do offer a free engagement session in their packages. I see this as a huge benefit because then you get a preview of what kind of job your photographer will do for your wedding. Unfortunately, we live across the country from our wedding venue, so we won't get to take advantage of doing engagement pictures with the same photographer.

Instead, we're hiring a friend of ours who is a photography student. She recently did a session for friends of ours and I happened to be sitting with her as she was going through the final product on her laptop. Her pictures were amazing and that prompted me to ask about her prices. If I hadn't seen examples of her work, I wouldn't have asked about her prices and would have gone with someone with more experience.

@Cannolis I kind of feel the same way.. The budget isn't really an issue, but I almost feel like posed engagement photos "aren't us" if that makes any sense. We're also goofy and can't keep a straight face! At this point it's just something I think we need to talk about, especially with all the good points and suggestions I've received here.

We got dolled up, went to a beautiful rolling hill area, and set up a tripod. Best dozen photos we've never taken. Cost nothing.
