Engagement ring issues

Sarah, on May 25, 2021 at 1:50 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 15
I was wondering if anyone has had any issues with how their engagement ring feels? I have been wearing my engagement ring for two years. I only take it off for showering, swimming, and doing my hair. The past few days my ring has been bothering me, to the point where when I’m asleep I’m subconsciously taking my ring off and losing it in my bed. I finally had enough of it irritating me while I was at work today and I took it off and put it in my wallet. I told my fiancé about it, that the ring has been irritating my ring finger and how I have been subconsciously taking it off while I sleep. Has anyone had a problem like this before? I’m looking for solutions.

Are you having a skin issue with the seasonal change?

    Swelling?

Does the ring need cleaning and that's why it's bothering you?

I got mine a year and a half ago. It's a round stone with a halo. I only wear it for social occasions, not to work or errands or anything, because it makes my finger sore. The jeweler re-sized it down as much as they could but if they do it any more, it won't fit over my knuckle. So I've just accepted that I won't be wearing it all the time, unless I get a matching set with my wedding band or something.

I've had mine almost two years now, I don't really wear it anymore - only when I'm going out. I don't wear it while cleaning, showering, sleeping or exercising - its very rare I wear it around the house - sometimes it does bother my finger if I wear it after going on a long walk with my dog and its warm out cause my fingers swell

Take it to the jeweler where it was purchased from and have them clean it and inspect it. They might be able to tell you what is causing it.

Also, I would not sleep in your engagement ring. They say you should never sleep, shower, swim, or clean in your e-ring. Maybe giving your finger more of a break will help with the irritation as well.

I would recommend taking off your rings prior to applying any skincare products and washing your hands before putting rings back on. Sometimes product can get in there and cause irritation.

I’m having skin irritation and some swelling with it. Which is weird because I have never had this in the past two years.

My fiancé and I tried taking the ring to the jeweler he got the ring from, shortly after the engagement to get it resized. The jeweler he got the ring from closed up their store in our area (apparently the taxes where to high). They have a few stores in a neighboring state. Which we are not driving to a neighboring state to get the ring resized or cleaned.

I actually went through something similar in the past! In my case, I had developed a nickel sensitivity. Do you know what kind of metal your band is made of? If it is made of gold, it contains nickel. That includes white gold. Actually, I learned that white gold contains even more nickel than yellow gold. My whole life I could wear gold jewelry, then after 22 years I suddenly developed a sensitivity to it 🤷🏼‍♀️ Now I can only wear platinum or sterling silver jewelry for any extended amount of time.

If you're on the east coast, we just had WILD weather swings.
Take care of your skin, clean your ring, and give it a few days.

I second that you probably need to wear your ring less. Jewelers will tell you not to wear it while sleeping, showering, swimming, gardening, cooking, prepping food, exercising, etc the list goes on. All of those things cause wear and tear on your ring, and its also important for your skin to breathe. Its possible you have developed a sensitivity to the metal itself, or that wearing it so much is causing some sort of bacteria or other substance to get trapped next to your skin and that is what is causing the irritation.

I wear a silicone ring (which is hypoallergenic and super easy to clean) during the day most days and alternate between my e-ring or wedding band on days when I'm not doing too many physical tasks with my hands, and when I feel like being fancy or there is a special occasion I will wear both my e-ring and wedding band together.

As far as I know it does not contain any nickel in it. Ever since I was a kid I would get a rash if I wore anything containing nickel.

Do you know what material the ring is? If it is not platinum, it contains nickel. All gold, whether white gold, yellow gold or rose gold contains nickel

I still wear my engagement ring all the time after we got married, but I also take it off if I'm painting the house, taking bath for the dog, kneading bread, or doing other dirty chores. My husband bought the ring from the Darry Ring online store, it will take longer to ship back and forth if it's damaged or bumped. Because they don't have an store near me. I recommend that if you feel uncomfortable to wear the ring, you should be careful that it may be an allergy that some element in contact with your skin.
