Engagment ring cleaning, need advice

Sweetbella, on June 24, 2010 at 12:51 PM Posted in Planning 6 42

Hey all, I got my ring from Kay Jewelers and my mom said I can get cleaning for free at any jewelers store, is that true? I am thinking about having it cleaned once a month. Let me know, thanks! I am also thinking about buying a ring cleanser to put ring in every night.

Is it white gold or yellow gold? Is it under any kind of warranty? I would ask Kay's what they recommend.

Yup, it's true. Just walk right in & ask if they can clean the ring. If they're good they'll let it soak & have you come back in a few minutes, then steam it or whatever they do. However some people just steam it.

Always ask first. Most jewelers do this as a service free of charge. However, there are some that only do this for their clients or for a charge.

I didn't even get my ring from them, but JB Robinson which is a sister store of Kay's cleans mine for nothing. The place where my FS bought my ring went out of business.

If the ring will be under warranty, you'll want to make sure that you're not voiding the warranty by taking it elsewhere.

Not true. Usually you can get it cleaned for free at the jewelry store you purchased it at. So in your case since Kay Jewelers is a chain store, you could go to any Kay Jewelers and it should be free. I know as a courtesy the jewelry store I used to work at did it for free no matter where you purchased it at, but it's definitely not the case with all jewelers.

I've gotten several rings from Kay and have under warranty and every time I go in, they clean ALL my rings.

Wedding band we got from another store... we'll see if they do the same thing.

To effectively clean any wedding ring:

Put a dew drops of DAWN dish soap in a glass and add warm water. Drop in your rings and let soak for a few hours or overnight. Remove the rings and squirt an old toothbrush with dawn (as you would toothpaste) and use it to scrub the ring all over, and under the settings. Rinse with warm water.

Diamonds attract oils, so this will help keep it looking new and shiny.

You can just walk in, and say "would you be so kind to clean my ring? Thanks" And they do it. It's not like it'sa magical solution they use... it's just soapy water and steam.

Another at home cleaner: bubbly tonic water. Get half a glass and dip your ring in it for a couple of minutes. Comes out like new Smiley smile

I desperately need mine cleaned SOON. Was thinking of stopping by a jewelry store this weekend. Is it something that I can just pop in to the store and they can do it immediately? How long does it take?

    Thanks!

Actually, soap leaves a residue on the diamonds leaving them a little cloudy. What jewelers use is yellow ammonia and water. It's 2 parts water to 1 part yellow ammonia. It cleans it and doesn't leave any residue on your diamond.

@ Heather- that's why you use dawn. No residue. Real soap yup, major residue.

I don't know about you, but when FS bought my ring Kay gave him a crapload of papers on all their policies about cleaning, the warranty, rhodium dipping, etc, etc. With my warranty, if I get it checked every 6 months, its under warranty. IF something happens to my ring and I haven't had the diamonds checked or anything like that in the past 6 months, I have to pay to replace it. The cleaning is included in all of this. Whenever I'm nearby (which isn't very often) I stop into Kay and they clean my ring. They dip it in something and do a few other things. It only takes a few minutes, and its completely free. They never ask for papers or anything like that.. So I'm assuming anyone off the streets can bring in a ring and they'll clean it for free.

Megan, since it's white gold, they're also going to want to rhodium dip it periodically, too. Definitely check with Kay because other jewelers will probably charge you for it - Kay might do it automatically with cleaning.

I agree with Heather on this one. I worked in jewelery and we used a water and ammonia based cleaner solution in an ultrasonic cleaner. Soaps can leave residue on the diamond. Using filtered water is also helpful if you're an area with hard water.

Well does Dawn soap still helps?? If yes, should I do it every night to put my ring in the glass?

Dawn is not a soap, it is a degreaser. My jeweler has recommended this to me, and it does work. I have been doing it for 2 years now, and my ring rarely needs cleaned. I'm sure there are many methods to follow, this is just the one I use, and it works. If you tried it with regular soap, it would cloud the stone yes, but again, Dawn is not a soap.
