Engagment ring cleaning, need advice

Hey all, I got my ring from Kay Jewelers and my mom said I can get cleaning for free at any jewelers store, is that true? I am thinking about having it cleaned once a month. Let me know, thanks! I am also thinking about buying a ring cleanser to put ring in every night.

Oh okay my bad. Analy, is it okay to use Dawn the degreaser every night or just once a while?

I use it weekly, but when I first got my ring I used it every night, since I was totally obsessed. LOL It will not hurt the metal or stones in any way, do it as often as you like.

I think you're supposed to do it every once in a while. I don't think doing it every night would be good for the ring. But I don't really know

Kay is also a sister company of Jareds, so you should be able to get it cleaned there as well Smiley smile

Sorry Analy I didn't realize that dawn was not considered a soap because we don't use it in our household. And to be fair you did refer to it as soap in your first post...

My engagement ring is from Kay's. They do in-store cleaning for anyone for free. If you want your ring steam cleaned it takes 2-3 weeks to get back, they send it off & it's inspected properly. I recommend that. I am having a stone in my tightened & it's costing $20.99 to send it off for that but while they have it they are steaming it. She said mine will shine as bright as the new wedding band he is buying me. So I am definitely for sending it off.

Kay's is one of the best companies we've dealt with. Good luck!

I'm pretty sure most places will do it for you if you bought the ring there in the first place. Like I got my rings from Dean's here in town and they will clean my rings for free when I go it. They will also clean any other jewelry I have on me that day too. They check it, take it to the back and clean it. The whole thing takes about 5 or 10 minutes. So I usually just stand there and drink a bottle of water and look around.

I would advise that you buy a baby toothbrush to clean your rings with. The bristle will be extra soft and bendy and less likely to scratch the surface of any metals in your ring. Cleaning everyday may be too often and those tiny scratches that a toothbrush can cause will start to add up and make your ring look dull.

I agree and clean mine exactly as Analy says- I have for years!!! The toothbrush with dawn does wonders Smiley smile I still bring mine to the jeweler every now and then for a professional cleaning, usually at its check up (every 6 months) and they rhodium dip it for free. Kays should clean your ring for free as most jewelers do.

Future mrs- do they have to send it away to do the rhodium dip? mine needs to be dipped really bad, but haven't found time to do it.

I don't think that's necessary unless you put lotion on your hands a lot during the day. if it ain't broke don't fit it is my motto, I don't know what excessive cleaning would do to a ring every single day. call kay and ask if you can have it cleaned and polished before the wedding. my jewelry store does that for free so it's as shiny as my band is at the wedding. otherwise the e-ring would look dull next to the new band.

Hmmm.... I'm glad you posted this because my ring is in serious need of a soak. And typically I'm too lazy to pop into the store so I'm going to try the dawn method. yay!

I got my ring from kays and have a warranty on it. i have to get it cleaned every 6 months and a prong check every 6 months and they reccomend i get it dipped a really good cleanned once a year. i would for sure get a warranty on yiur ring if at all possible, i was talking to a lady the other day and one of her friends diamond fell out of her ring after wearing it for 40 years! so a warranty is a great thing to have!!! and as far as leaving it in a cleaner over night i WOULD NOT do it. i forgot one of my rings in cleaner over night and it turned a really funky brown yellow color. i sometimes use dish soap like mentioned before. this helps to keep the icky gunk out of the cracks. DONT use tooth paste! the lad at kays says it will mess up the metal.

If you got it from Kay why wouldn't you just get it cleaned there instead of going to another store Meg? Just curious. I got my ring from there too and they're always super nice and like kk, I get my ring cleaned every time I'm in the area. I only clean my ring myself about once a week. I'm really interested in trying the Dawn thing that Analy said though.

Love you Analy you always have the best advice Smiley smile BEWBS!!

I always give my ring to FH to clean for me. He uses an old toothbrush with some soap water. I believe he uses dish-washing liquid in some warm water. It works great IMO
