Envelopes for postcard save the dates?

PigeonBride, on May 19, 2016 at 1:05 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

I'm just in the beginning stages of planning, and have a question for those who have used postcards for their save the dates. Did you mail them in an envelope to keep the postcard protected, or did you leave them like a traditional postcard? Thanks for your help!

I did postcards from our venue (historic park). I didn't put them in envelopes.

Postage is cheaper if you have a standard sized card and no envelope.

Mail it like a traditional postcard, since its a STD it shouldn't have any valuable information to worry about.

We mailed them like a traditional postcard. My only regret is not having the postage hand cancelled at the post office. The sorting machines the postcards went through left an ugly black line on the bottom, and some ended up with ink on the front. Other than that we were happy with how they turned out. We designed them and had them printed through vista print, I spent 16 dollars for about 50 of them so it wasn't that expensive and postcard stamps are cheaper.

This may be a silly question, but it's my first time posting and I'm not getting notifications for the responses. Is there a way to follow the thread so I don't lose it?

As a postcard I wouldn't bother with an envelope, plus its cheaper to mail a postcard than a letter.

@Falynn, if you go to your profile page on the bottom right will be an activity box that has all the threads you've started and/or commented on. You will need to use a desktop for that.

Ours were postcards and we mailed them as is.

Falynn - are you having a destination wedding? If not, then it is way too early to send STDs. Don't send them until like January. And like others said, be really really sure about your guest list because once you send them, you lock in the guest list. Everyone who receives a STD must receive an invitation.

I did postcard STD's and didn't use envelopes. Like PP's said, it's cheaper to mail postcards than letters. Also, unless you have lots of OOT guests or are having your wedding over a holiday weekend like me, I suggest you skip save the dates and save a little bit. I don't regret doing them, but they are totally unnecessary and the same can be accomplished by word of mouth or calling/text.

I designed my own and had them next day printed at Staples. It was $38 for 100 STD's plus $28 for 80 stamps. You can find even better deals for printing if you're not under time constraints.

@Kelli, we're doing a wedding weekend at a summer camp about an hour and a half from where we live. The reason we're doing a STD so early is because we have to guarentee a set number of those spending the night, and we really have no idea how many of would want to stay the weekend (we're hoping most). On the STD we're going to link our wedding website, where there will be a quick survey so guests can let us know if they'd like to stay at the camp overnight (the rooms are private, and there is AC/heating).

Guys, hijacking for a second, when should I send STDs? I know it's not needed but ours are super cute and I can't help it. So if the wedding is january and everyone is local.. when do STDs go out and then when to invites go out? I was thinking July & September respectively?

Oh, and I would use envelopes just cause the Postal Service around here DGAF. I imagine they'd be ruined without the protection. Once, I picked up a package that had been damaged beyond belief even after being covered in "FRAGILE" tape. There was a literal boot print on it like I was in a cartoon. o_o

Ours were postcards and we just sent them like they are!

I do recommend taking them straight to the post office and having them not put the postcards through the sorting machine. Otherwise you'll get those ugly barcode lines on the front Smiley sad

We did STDs and we are glad we did. We aren't doing a destination wedding or anything - just kind of wanted to. Plus our invitation designer made them SUPER CUTE so we couldn't pass them up! They were really cheap though. We sent them as is. Post office got dumb little lines on them, but like someone else said there isn't exactly tons of important information on them so it's no biggie. We did have a few out of town guests so we made sure they got some, then we just used the rest with whoever we felt would like to have it. It wasn't a big deal to get everyone, since we will still be sending out invites. Y'know?

I think the main reason I'm glad we did it is because now we have tons of addresses all ready to send the invitations! PLUS now we know which addresses didn't work so we can make sure we fix it for the actual invites Smiley smile

@Falynn - By what date do people have to commit to the renting a room for the wedding weekend?
