Episcopal Premarital counseling?

Kayla, on July 20, 2018 at 9:43 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 5
Not sure if this is the right place to post this but it’s worth a shot!
My fiancé and I are getting married under my lifelong Episcopal priest but have no idea what to expect out of the premarital counseling. Has anyone gone through this process? What kinds of questions do they ask? Honestly, neither of us are very religious. We believe in a higher power but we don’t go to church or anything so we are a bit nervous going in to it. We really just love the priest and couldn’t imagine being married by anyone else. Any advice is appreciated!

If it eases your mind at all the first thing our priest told me was “don’t worry, I’m not here to judge you.” Other than that so far he’s given us a packet of information about the requirements at our church and an outline of the upcoming premarital meetings (money, communication, plans for the future).

I haven't been through the Episcopal process yet, but if you've chosen a good pastor, I doubt they'll be very judgmental of where you are in your faith journey. I'm actually doing premarital counseling with a different pastor than the one who is performing the ceremony specifically because of what we wanted out of our counseling, since we're both in very different places when it comes to faith. Obviously, not everyone knows as many Episcopalian pastors as I do(my dad is one), but I've met very few who would be judge-y about your take on religion.

Hey, Kayla! You have absolutely come to the right place! Smiley winking

I'm not familiar with the Episcopal church, but here are a couple of general articles on premarital counseling that might give you the sneak peek you're looking for!

Premarital Counseling Is a Must—Even If You're Not Religious

What You Should Be Talking About in Premarital Counseling

Basically, my understanding is that this a safe, judgement-free zone for talking out big-ticket items that may not come up in usual conversation with your partner. Plus, you have an unbiased mediator to help with the communication if need be! You don't need to share specifics if you don't want to, but do you have an idea of a few things you might want to cover? Smiley heart

Thanks so much everyone for the advice!! We feel a lot better about everything. Chris, we’ve honestly covered every big ticket item we can think of so I’m interested to see what else he might bring up!
