ETA--RESOLVED: Just married: depositing checks?

JulyPittsburghBride, on July 17, 2016 at 3:04 PM Posted in Married Life 0 19

We got married yesterday (yay!!!!!!!!!!!!) and leave for our honeymooning tomorrow. We were going through our cards today. We have a number of checks made out to the two of us as Mr. and Mrs. Smith. I haven't changed my last name yet and won't until after the honeymoon, and then I feel like the process could take a little while. Do the checks all sit and wait? I feel like that could make checkbook balancing difficult for folks. Thanks in advance!

We waited until after the honeymoon to do anything with any of the money. Then we deposited all of the ones that said Mr OR Mrs and after I changed my license we did both. As long as it doesn't take you months or something it should be fine, I would think most people would understand.

I know people who deposited either in a joint account or the groom's account and it was fine so long as both parties sign the cheque.

This is one of the reasons I always write wedding cheques out to bride's maiden name and groom's name. That and not every bride changes their name.

I made him sign them over to me, then I signed them and deposited them in the ATM. I didn't have any issues. My bank did say that I would also be able to take my marriage license, bring him to the bank for them to witness him signing them over and deposit it that way, but our schedules didn't mesh since I was on vacay and he wasn't until we actually left for the honeymoon.

If you have a joint account at your bank you shouldn't have any issue.

    First off, Congrats!!!!

Ask your bank, I have wrote out checks to Mr. And Mrs. John Smith and they have been able to deposit right away. I assume into the grooms account, if they just say Mr. And Mrs. Smith I'm not sure but the bank should be able to assist.

Depends on your bank. My bank I could deposit ones made out to my maiden name but any with my married name had to wait until I changed it on my bank account (until I had my marriage license back then I brought the certified copy to the bank). And that were Mr AND Mrs we had to open a join account because it was AND not OR. Any made out just to my husband he could deposit right away

You should be able to do the deposit through the ATM after both of you sign the check into a joint account.

Surprisingly you can usually deposit checks into an ATM without having the correct name on it as long as it's endorsed. The actual bank counter not so much.

We both signed the checks and then some checks went into my account while others went into DH's account. We didn't have any trouble with our bank. And it was nice doing this before we went on our honeymoon, one less thing to worry about when we got back.

If you're just depositing them, you shouldn't have any problems. We received a lot of checks written out every which way. My husband signed them all and deposited them into our joint account. I didn't sign any and this was also prior to changing my name.

Thanks, all. We don't have any joint accounts yet. We're authorized users on each account, but our banks discouraged the joint accounts with name changes that were coming soon enough anyways, saying the paperwork was a hassle.

If you have a joint account, it really shouldn't matter.

You may be able to deposit them into DH's account, ask your bank. I'm sure they've come across this before.

I usually deposit checks (written out to my FH with his permission, of course) into an account that doesn't have his name on it, at the ATM. I write 'for deposit only' on the back and have had no issues.

Update: DH and I sorted checks into 3 categories:

    John Smith

    Mr. and Mrs. Smith

    Katie and John Smith

We signed the backs of all checks. He signed the ones only to him; we both signed the ones to us. We deposited all successfully via our mobile app. (We bank with USAA if that helps.)

Just an FYI - you may get some of those joint ones back and not accepted for deposit after someone reviews them. I only attempted to deposit one joint one via the mobile app and it said it was, but the next day they reversed it and told me with two signatures and it going into my account I had to go in person to deposit it.

I work at a bank and typically you cannot deposit checks made out to "Name One AND Name Two" unless it is a joint account. You can most likely expect those checks to be returned. You would need to go into your bank with valid ID and both sign the check in the presence of a manager and then it could be deposited into either your account or his. Banks follow federal guidelines so this should be universal, however banks do have some discretion depending on the circumstance. Good luck!
