Etsy is sometimes such a rip-off.

SunshineJenn, on March 9, 2014 at 4:35 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 21

Since we're doing a DW, we really want to do welcome bags for our guests. I was looking on Etsy for blank canvas totes and found several stores that sell them in bulk, and the cost was quite reasonable. I need approx. 30. which is about $75. But then they tack on $35 in shipping and suddenly, I'm at $110 for medium-sized, average quality, blank canvas totes.

Meanwhile on Amazon, I can get 30 of these (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CYQ1RDC/ref=cm_sw_r_fa_asp_AwA5H.1WJ39VQ) - AND THEY COME WITH A ZIPPER - for $119 and free shipping. Guess which one I'm getting.

I'm glad you found a better deal! It sounded like those Etsy bags were way overpriced!

MnDex, YES. OMG if Swarovski is mentioned, it's like the angels blessed the jewelry themselves.

I agree, Etsy has some of the same exact jewelry you can find online as ebay. Ebay being much cheaper.

The S&H on some of their products is outrageous.

I have only bought one thing off of Etsy, Everything else I buy from Amazon or I make it myself. I wanted to buy those hangers with the names spelled out in wire but then found out I can do it myself for about $10.

When I was looking for wedding shoes, there was a pair on Etsy that was the exact same from The Dessy Group, with a Dessy Group Shoe Clip, which on their website would've been $50-60 total, but the Etsy seller, who "created" it, was charging $115 and the phrase "DEEP DEEP DISCOUNT!" was in the description.

There's so many adorable, creative, reasonably priced items on that site, but, definitely one where comparison shopping is necessary.

@Aftan This is the website that I bookmarked that gives instructions on how to do it. http://shellchris.weebly.com/custom-hangers.html

I have not made them yet, but I did test out my writing with the wire and it wasn't as hard as it looks.

Etsy has unfortunately become a sweatshop haven - which will ultimately ruin the site. I am a seller on there (vintage clothing) and prior to about 3 years ago all you had on there were mostly stay-at-home mom's and students selling REAL artisan made goods and vintage sellers like me. Well, they let the rules lax BIG TIME 1-2 years ago and now most of the stuff on there is made in factories or sweatshops and it is TOTAL JUNK. I ordered "custom bags" to ship jewelry in last year from Etsy...they were trash and were not even the same as the photos they presented.

Yeah, it feels a lot like a low-brow version of ebay these days. I seriously don't mind paying more for quality stuff. But some of it you just know is fake or mass produced by the tiny child slaves of Chinese children.

@Aftan I looked it up on youtube and there are videos showing you how to do it also. I am considering trying it. I am not going to pay $60+ for hangers

Yeah, I miss the old Etsy. Great prices for things like custom made vintage replica swimsuits. I loved sending my measurements and paying a stay at home mom to hand make them! I found a hairpiece on Etsy for $110 plus shipping, and then turned around and found the SAME EXACT one on eBay for $13 with free shipping from China. No surprise there.

If I purchase anything from Etsy, I am SUPER, SUPER selective. Especially since half of the things I find on there, I can make myself. Like feather boutonnieres.

The top one is $11.95 $2.50 shipping on Etsy.

I made five bigger and better ones for roughly $20.

    rip off....

I shop Etsy when I don't have the time to make something myself. I have a few favorite vendors that I order from. They are still the stay at home Mom that can sew. My daughter is really tall and very thin for her age, so I send her measurements each time. Shipping isn't hugely expensive, but then it's one or two items of clothing. I have to think that one person sending orders out as they get them is vastly different than a huge company that probably gets a bulk deal on shipping.

I found really awesome zippered totes on Amazon actually. I didn't even think to look on VP, but I'm happy with the ones we purchased since our guests can use them as a beach bag too. Smiley smile

The personalization would have been nice, but I'm going to go look for a carvable stamp from Michael's and some fabric paint, so I can make my own stamp.

@Staci and Jennifer...i decided to get the wire and do the names because if i can't figure out how to do that then it will be a waste of money to buy all the other stuff
